VILNIUS, Lithuania – NATO fighter jets shot down an unidentified drone after it entered Lithuanian airspace early Tuesday, prompting a military response near the country’s second-largest city as concern grows over repeated drone incursions along NATO’s eastern flank.
The drone was detected shortly after midnight and was destroyed near Pratkunai, in southern Lithuania near Kaunas, according to Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre. Preliminary information indicated that the aircraft likely entered Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, but authorities have not determined who operated it or where it originated.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda thanked NATO personnel for what he described as a swift response. Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys said the reaction demonstrated that the alliance remained prepared to defend Lithuanian airspace.
The incident occurred only two days after another suspected drone alert temporarily closed Vilnius Airport and prompted NATO fighters to scramble. That earlier alert was later determined to have been caused by a flock of birds, underscoring the difficulty of distinguishing potential drone threats from other objects on radar.
Drone’s origin remains unresolved
Lithuanian authorities have pointed to Belarus as the likely entry point for Tuesday’s drone, but that does not establish Belarusian responsibility for the aircraft.
The National Crisis Management Centre said the drone was probably coming from Belarus before it was shot down near Pratkunai. Officials are continuing to examine the wreckage and determine its ownership and origin.
That distinction is important because drones have entered or approached Baltic airspace during the war in Ukraine for several different reasons. Ukrainian authorities have previously said Russian electronic warfare can interfere with the navigation of Ukrainian drones, causing them to stray from their intended routes.
The latest incident therefore does not, by itself, establish that Russia deliberately sent the drone into Lithuanian territory.

NATO air defense responds
The shootdown was carried out by aircraft operating under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission.
NATO provides fighter aircraft for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania because the three Baltic states do not maintain the fighter capabilities needed to conduct the alliance’s air-policing mission independently. Allied aircraft operate from bases including Šiauliai in Lithuania and Ämari in Estonia and can be scrambled when required.
The mission has become increasingly important as unidentified or foreign drones have appeared in the airspace of NATO members bordering Russia and Belarus.
Lithuania’s own defense ministry reported that NATO aircraft had already been responding to aircraft and unidentified objects around the Baltic states in the weeks before Tuesday’s incident. On Sept. 13, NATO fighters were sent to investigate an unidentified object near Lithuania that was subsequently identified as a flock of birds.
The latest event is more serious because the object was confirmed as a drone and was destroyed inside Lithuanian airspace.
A growing challenge for NATO’s eastern flank
The incident adds to a pattern of airspace disruptions affecting NATO’s eastern members.
In August, NATO aircraft operating from Lithuania and Estonia were involved in the interception of a foreign drone over Latvia. Lithuanian defense officials have also documented repeated scrambles involving aircraft operating near the Baltic states’ borders with Russia and Belarus.
NATO has responded to the broader increase in airspace incidents by strengthening its eastern-flank posture through Eastern Sentry, which brings additional aircraft, air-defense systems, surveillance assets and other capabilities into the alliance’s defensive arrangements. NATO says the initiative was established after a series of serious airspace violations in 2025.
The alliance has also emphasized that its response to drone incursions should be proportionate and decisive while improving its ability to detect and counter unmanned aircraft.
For Lithuania, the immediate issue is the investigation into Tuesday’s drone. The country’s authorities must establish whether it was a stray aircraft, a system disrupted by electronic warfare or an intentional intrusion.
Until that determination is made, the incident raises security concerns without providing conclusive evidence about who sent the drone into Lithuanian airspace.
