CAIRO, Egypt – China and Egypt have agreed to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership as Chinese President Xi Jinping meets Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, with both governments emphasizing economic cooperation, security coordination and a greater role for multilateral diplomacy amid rising Middle East tensions.
Xi’s state visit, his first to Egypt in a decade, coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Egypt was the first Arab and African country to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1956.
The timing gives the visit significance beyond bilateral relations. The Middle East is facing heightened security tensions, while disruptions to major shipping and energy routes have increased the strategic importance of countries such as Egypt, which controls the Suez Canal.
China and Egypt expand cooperation
Following talks in Cairo, the two sides witnessed the signing of cooperation documents covering Belt and Road cooperation, artificial intelligence, trade, industrial and supply chains, science and technology, education and transport.
More than 20 cooperation documents were signed during the visit, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
The agreements reflect an effort to move the relationship beyond infrastructure and traditional trade into newer areas of technology and industrial development.
El-Sisi also announced the launch of the third phase of the Egyptian-Chinese industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, with planned activity in renewable energy, automobile manufacturing, textiles and chemical fibers.
