China’s Economy Grows 4.5% as Strong Exports Offset Weak Domestic Demand

Third-quarter growth accelerated from 4.3% as trade expanded, but subdued consumer spending and falling property investment point to an uneven recovery.

BEIJING, China – China’s economy grew 4.5% year on year in the July–September quarter, accelerating from 4.3% in the previous quarter as foreign trade expanded, while weak consumer spending and falling investment in property continued to weigh on domestic demand.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported on October 19 that gross domestic product increased 1.2% from the second quarter. Growth for the first nine months of 2026 reached 4.6%, putting the economy within the government’s full-year growth target range of 4.5% to 5%.

The figures show an improvement in overall economic growth, but not a uniformly strong recovery. Exports and industrial activity have provided support while retail spending and investment remain comparatively subdued. The balance between external demand and domestic activity will be important in determining whether the pace of growth can be sustained.

Exports provide an important source of growth

China’s General Administration of Customs reported that exports rose 16.4% year on year to 23.2 trillion yuan during the first nine months of 2026. Imports increased 22.3% to 16.74 trillion yuan, while total goods trade grew 18.8% to 39.94 trillion yuan.

Export growth accelerated during the period. In September, exports rose 29.6% year on year to 3.03 trillion yuan, according to the customs data. Total imports and exports for the month increased 27.5% to 5.16 trillion yuan.

Trade in industrial robots, electronic components, computer parts and electrical equipment exceeded 10 trillion yuan during the first three quarters, up 58.9% year on year, the customs administration reported. These categories contributed 11.3 percentage points to overall foreign-trade growth, according to the government’s summary of the data.

The figures point to strong demand for some Chinese industrial and technology-related goods. However, trade growth alone does not establish how much exports contributed directly to the acceleration in GDP. The national accounts measure production across the economy, including consumption, investment, government activity and net exports.

Industrial activity remains stronger than consumer spending

Industrial production continued to expand in September. The NBS reported that value added at industrial enterprises above the designated size rose 5.5% year on year.

Retail spending grew more slowly. Total retail sales of consumer goods increased 1.1% in September from a year earlier, although the monthly growth rate was 0.7 percentage points higher than in August.

For the first nine months, retail sales of consumer goods rose 1.1% year on year. The broader measure of retail sales of goods and services increased 2.6%, including growth of 5% in services and 1% in goods.

The gap between industrial output and consumer spending illustrates the uneven pattern of activity. Factories and exporters have continued to expand, but retail figures indicate that demand from households has been more restrained.

Retail-sales figures are one indicator of consumption, rather than a complete measure of household welfare or spending. They nevertheless provide a useful contrast with the stronger performance of industrial production and trade.

Property downturn weighs on investment

Investment remains a major weakness in the economic data. Fixed-asset investment, excluding rural households, fell 7.2% year on year during the first nine months of 2026, according to the NBS. Private investment declined 10.4%.

Investment in real-estate development fell 20.6% over the same period. The floor area of newly built commercial buildings sold declined 13.2%, while the value of sales of newly built commercial buildings fell 13.9%.

The property-sector contraction matters because real estate is linked to construction, materials, employment and household finances. Falling sales and investment can weaken demand for related industries and discourage businesses from committing to new projects.

A prolonged property downturn can also affect household confidence, particularly where housing accounts for a substantial share of family wealth. The latest figures establish the continued decline in property investment and sales, although they do not by themselves quantify the effect on household spending or explain the decisions of individual consumers.

Investment in high-tech industries offered a partial contrast. The NBS reported that it rose 4.9% year on year in the first three quarters, including increases in information services and aerospace and electronic-equipment manufacturing. That growth, however, was not enough to offset the overall fall in fixed-asset investment.

Growth target remains within reach, but risks persist

The 4.6% increase in GDP during the first nine months places China within reach of its official full-year target of 4.5% to 5%. The third-quarter result also exceeded the 4.4% growth forecast in a Reuters poll of economists, according to Reuters’ reporting on the release.

Meeting the target would not, on its own, demonstrate that domestic demand had recovered. The latest figures show that economic growth can remain comparatively firm while investment falls and consumer spending grows slowly.

The export outlook also carries risks. Changes in overseas demand, trade restrictions and disputes with major trading partners could affect Chinese manufacturers and exporters. Strong recent trade figures do not guarantee that the same pace will continue through the final quarter.

The trade data also show that imports rose faster than exports during the first nine months, although the growth rates alone do not determine the contribution of trade to GDP. Assessing that contribution requires the national accounts’ expenditure breakdown, including consumption, investment and net exports.

Domestic demand remains the central challenge

China’s third-quarter figures show an economy that has regained some momentum, supported by expanding industrial production and rapid export growth. At the same time, weak retail-sales growth and the continued decline in property and fixed-asset investment point to persistent domestic pressures.

The key question is whether household consumption and broader investment can strengthen enough to complement export and manufacturing activity. The latest data establish the unevenness of the recovery, but do not yet demonstrate that domestic demand has entered a sustained rebound.
