Elon Musk Reportedly Meets with Iran’s UN Ambassador to Discuss US-Iran Tensions
Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, a prominent supporter and adviser to President-elect Donald Trump, reportedly met with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, earlier this week. According to The New York Times, the meeting took place in New York on Monday at a secret location and lasted for over an hour.
Citing two unnamed Iranian officials, the report indicates that Musk and Iravani discussed ways to de-escalate tensions between the United States and Iran. The officials described the meeting as “positive” and “good news,” signaling a potential shift in diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Musk has been an influential figure in Trump’s political campaign, donating more than $118 million to support Trump’s election efforts after endorsing him in July. Following Trump’s victory, Musk has reportedly played a significant role in shaping Cabinet appointments and engaging with world leaders.
The New York Times suggests that this meeting could mark a shift in tone between Tehran and Washington, as the relationship between the two has been strained for years. Under Trump’s first term, the U.S. withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, which had been a key achievement of President Barack Obama’s administration. Trump also ordered the killing of Iran’s top general, further escalating tensions.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, banned negotiations with the Trump administration during the first term, citing distrust and dissatisfaction with U.S. actions. More recently, during the 2020 campaign, U.S. intelligence agencies accused Iran of attempting to interfere with the election, including a cyberattack on Trump’s campaign.
