LAEM CHABANG, Thailand — The USS Abraham Lincoln arrived at Thailand’s Laem Chabang port Wednesday, giving roughly 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines a long-awaited opportunity to rest after an unusually extended deployment that included nearly seven months of operations in the Middle East.
The Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier’s arrival marks its first full port visit since the deployment began in November 2025. The U.S. Navy said the strike group has spent 286 days at sea, including more than 250 consecutive days without a full port stop.
The carrier had originally deployed toward the South China Sea before being redirected to the Middle East as the United States became involved in military operations against Iran.
A rare break after months at sea
Rear Adm. Robert Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, said the Thailand visit would provide sailors and Marines with an opportunity to rest and recharge while reinforcing the longstanding U.S.-Thailand relationship.
The visit is expected to last five days, after which the Lincoln is scheduled to continue its journey back to the United States. Thai officials have described the stop as a rest-and-recovery visit rather than a military exercise.
The deployment’s extraordinary length has drawn attention in the United States, particularly following reports of deteriorating living conditions, supply shortages and mental-health concerns among some members of the crew. The Navy has faced questions about the strain created by prolonged deployments during the Iran conflict.
Other U.S. warships arrive
The Lincoln did not arrive alone.
The USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, docked at nearby Sriracha, while the USS Robert Smalls, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser, arrived at Map Ta Phut in neighboring Rayong province.

The Navy said the strike group has now moved into the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations after completing its Middle East mission.
The Middle East deployment
The Lincoln spent nearly seven months operating in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, supporting U.S. military operations during the Iran war.
The Navy said the carrier strike group and other U.S. Navy and Marine Corps assets conducted combat operations in support of Operation Epic Fury and participated in maritime operations involving Iran.
The usually Asia-based USS George Washington relieved the Lincoln in the Middle East in August, allowing the carrier to begin its return journey.
Thailand visit strengthens military ties
The port call also highlights the longstanding defense relationship between Washington and Bangkok.
The U.S. Navy describes Thailand as its oldest partner in the region, with relations dating to the 1833 Treaty of Amity and Commerce. Thailand is also the United States’ only treaty ally in mainland Southeast Asia.
The two countries regularly participate in military exercises, including Cobra Gold, and conduct naval cooperation and port visits.
Capt. Dan Keeler, the Lincoln’s commanding officer, said the visit would give the crew an opportunity to experience Thailand while demonstrating the countries’ continuing partnership.
Pattaya prepares for thousands of visitors
Many of the service members are expected to spend their shore leave in Pattaya, a nearby resort city.
Thai authorities have arranged transportation between Laem Chabang and Pattaya and increased security around popular areas. Local officials are also warning businesses against overcharging visiting personnel.
The arrival is expected to provide a temporary boost to businesses in Pattaya, which has faced weaker tourism amid disruptions associated with the regional conflict.
A turning point for the crew
For the sailors aboard the Lincoln, the arrival represents more than a routine port visit.
The crew has spent most of the past year away from home, operating through an extended period of heightened military activity.
The Navy says the Thailand stop is intended to provide a chance to rest and recover before the carrier resumes its journey home.
The arrival also marks the transition from the Lincoln’s Middle East mission back toward its normal operating environment in the Indo-Pacific.
