USS Abraham Lincoln to Stop in Thailand After Lengthy Middle East Deployment

The carrier's Thailand visit will provide rest and logistical support after 266 days at sea, including 200 days in a combat zone.

BANGKOK, Thailand – The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier will make a port stop in Thailand next week as it begins its journey home following an extended deployment in the Middle East, Thai officials said.

The stop is intended to give the ship’s sailors and Marines time for rest, recovery and logistical support before the carrier returns to its home base in San Diego. Thai officials said no military exercises are planned during the visit.

More than 250 days at sea

The Abraham Lincoln has spent more than 250 consecutive days at sea, making the deployment one of the longest in the carrier’s history.

The carrier and its strike group have supported U.S. military operations in the Middle East, including operations connected to the conflict with Iran. The U.S. Navy said the ship has conducted combat operations during the deployment.

The Navy said the deployment reached 266 days, including 200 days in a combat zone, with more than 10,000 sorties conducted and 1.5 million pounds of ordnance dropped, according to Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao.

Thailand stop focused on crew recovery

Thai Defense Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri said the port visit would allow the crew to go ashore and relax after the unusually long deployment.

The Royal Thai Navy has also confirmed that three U.S. Navy ships from the carrier strike group are scheduled to visit eastern Thailand. The visit is being treated as a routine port call, with no military exercises planned.

Specific dates and security details have not been publicly disclosed.

Deployment raised concerns about crew conditions

The unusually long deployment has drawn attention to the conditions experienced by the approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the carrier.

Reuters reported concerns about morale and mental health among crew members, as well as shortages involving some supplies. The reports have prompted discussion about the strain created by exceptionally long carrier deployments.

The Navy has pushed back against some of those accounts.

Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said the crew had faced difficult conditions but argued that sailors and Marines continued to perform their mission and that the Navy had addressed supply and welfare issues during the deployment.

U.S. Navy preparing for the carrier’s return

The Abraham Lincoln is being relieved in the Middle East by the USS George Washington, which has arrived in the region as part of a planned rotation.

The Navy has described the Lincoln’s return as part of a planned deployment rotation.

The carrier’s eventual return to San Diego will mark the end of a deployment that has stretched far beyond a typical overseas mission.

Why the Thailand stop matters

The port call comes as the United States continues to manage military operations in the Middle East while maintaining its security relationships across the Indo-Pacific.

Thailand has been a U.S. treaty ally since 1954 and remains an important regional defense partner.

For the Abraham Lincoln crew, however, the immediate purpose of the visit is less strategic than practical: a chance to leave the ship, rest and prepare for the final leg home.

The carrier is expected to continue toward San Diego after the Thailand stop.
