CHONBURI, THAILAND – A Thai police officer accused of fatally shooting his wife at a kindergarten in Chonburi province surrendered Thursday after spending nearly 20 hours inside his home while police negotiated for him to come out.
Police detained Pol. Sub-Lt. Thassaphong Thongthach after he emerged from the residence at about 6:20 a.m., ending an overnight standoff in Bang Lamung district, according to Thai police and local reports. He was taken to Bang Lamung Police Station for questioning.
The shooting occurred Wednesday morning at Nong Pla Lai Municipal Kindergarten, where the victim, identified by Thai media as 48-year-old Pailin Thongthach, worked as a teacher. Police said the suspect subsequently left the school and returned to his home, about three kilometers away, where officers surrounded the property and began negotiations.
Children evacuated safely
All 44 children at the kindergarten were evacuated after the shooting, along with teachers and other staff. No children were injured.
Chonburi authorities closed the school and arranged psychological support for students and staff affected by the incident.
Police said the suspect surrendered without further violence. Thai media reported that his son, who is also a police officer, played a central role in persuading him to leave the house after negotiations continued through the night.
The suspect was reportedly unarmed when he emerged and told officers where he had left the firearm. Police subsequently recovered the weapon as evidence.
Investigation continues
Police are investigating the circumstances and motive for the shooting. Authorities have not established a final motive publicly, and allegations against the suspect remain subject to the criminal investigation and legal process.

The shooting comes amid heightened concern about firearm violence in Thailand. The government has already taken steps this year to tighten firearm controls, including suspending certain new firearm permits and preparing broader amendments to the country’s gun-control law.
The Thai government said in August that it was preparing amendments that would tighten requirements for firearm ownership and licensing, including training and testing requirements, shorter license periods and tougher penalties.
