PARIS, France — Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in new funding at a post-money valuation above €21 billion, or roughly $24 billion, giving the French artificial intelligence company substantially more capital to expand its models, computing infrastructure and international business.
The Series D round, announced Sept. 8, was led by Samsung Electronics, with the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity also participating as co-leads. Mistral said the financing is the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company.
The new investment comes as Europe seeks to build stronger domestic AI capabilities and reduce dependence on technology developed by U.S. and Chinese companies. Mistral has positioned its open-weight models and infrastructure as part of that effort.
New funding expands Mistral’s computing capacity
Mistral said the new capital will significantly expand its frontier research, computing capacity and infrastructure. It will also support commercial growth and the company’s international expansion.
The company said it now operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 global enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.
The investment gives Mistral greater financial capacity to train larger models and build the computing infrastructure needed to compete in a market where leading AI developers require increasingly large amounts of processing power.
Mistral has also been building a larger European computing footprint. The company has pursued data-center projects and additional computing arrangements as it seeks greater control over the infrastructure supporting its AI systems.
Samsung links AI investment to semiconductor operations
Samsung’s investment is accompanied by a strategic partnership that gives the financing a broader industrial dimension.
Samsung said Sept. 8 that it would work with Mistral to develop and implement on-premises AI technologies across its semiconductor operations. The partnership is intended to strengthen Samsung’s semiconductor engineering and manufacturing capabilities through customized AI systems.
Under the agreement, Samsung plans to integrate Mistral’s AI services, including its Mistral Large model, into semiconductor operations. The companies said the technology will be used to develop customized on-premises AI models for intelligence-driven infrastructure.
The partnership connects Mistral’s software and AI research with one of the world’s major semiconductor manufacturers, creating a direct industrial application for its technology beyond general-purpose AI services.
Europe seeks greater control over AI infrastructure
Mistral’s funding round comes amid a broader European effort to develop AI capabilities that can be controlled and deployed within the region.
The company describes its approach as “sovereign” and open-weight AI, with an emphasis on giving organizations greater control over the deployment of its models and infrastructure. Its latest funding announcement said the new capital would support that strategy while expanding frontier research.
The scale of the financing also reflects growing investor interest in European AI companies capable of competing internationally.
Mistral’s valuation remains well below those of the largest U.S. AI companies, but the new funding significantly increases the resources available to one of Europe’s most prominent AI developers.
Funding raises pressure to deliver growth
The larger valuation and additional capital also increase expectations for Mistral to demonstrate sustained technological and commercial growth.
The company said the funding would support research, infrastructure, products and international expansion rather than a single AI application. That strategy requires continued investment in computing capacity and the development of models that can attract enterprise customers.
Mistral’s relationship with Samsung could provide another route for commercial deployment by embedding its technology directly into industrial operations. Samsung’s semiconductor business also gives the partnership a connection to one of the most strategically important parts of the global technology supply chain.
For Europe, the financing strengthens the resources available to a major homegrown AI company at a time when the region is seeking greater technological independence. For Mistral, the next challenge is converting that financial backing into competitive models, infrastructure and durable commercial growth.
