KYIV, Ukraine – Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack across Ukraine on Aug. 27, striking nine cities and multiple regions in an assault that continued into Thursday morning, according to Ukrainian authorities and Russia’s Defense Ministry.
The Russian Defense Ministry described the operation as a “massive” strike and said it targeted military-related facilities, including industrial sites, oil refineries, logistics hubs and port infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said the barrage also damaged residential areas and critical civilian infrastructure.
The attack adds to the continuing escalation of long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides increasingly targeting military, industrial, energy and logistics infrastructure. The effects also extended beyond Ukraine after Moldova reported that drones had entered its airspace.
Kyiv and Major Cities Sustain Damage
Explosions were reported across Kyiv during the morning, with four districts of the capital affected. Kyiv authorities said residential buildings, a school and a medical facility were damaged.
Poltava, Odesa, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih were among the other affected areas. Ukrainian officials reported damage to apartment buildings and other civilian infrastructure, while rail services were disrupted following the attacks.
Odesa, a major Black Sea port and an important route for Ukraine’s agricultural exports, was also struck. Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said Russian forces used drones and ballistic weapons against critical infrastructure in the Poltava, Sumy and Kherson regions as well as residential areas in Kharkiv.
Civilian Casualties Reported
Ukrainian authorities reported deaths and injuries following the barrage.
The Associated Press reported that at least two people were killed and 14 injured across the affected areas. Reuters reported at least one death in its initial account, illustrating how casualty figures were changing as emergency crews assessed the damage.

Ukraine Reports Interceptions
Ukraine’s Air Force said its air defenses intercepted or suppressed a large number of incoming weapons, including seven ballistic missiles.
Despite those efforts, Ukrainian officials have continued to warn about the strain on the country’s air-defense network and the need for additional systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, including U.S.-made Patriot systems.
Russia has increasingly combined large numbers of drones with missile attacks, creating large-scale barrages that place sustained pressure on Ukrainian defenses.
Russia and Ukraine Give Differing Accounts
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces used high-precision weapons launched from land, air and sea, along with unmanned aerial vehicles. It said the targets included military-industrial facilities, logistics sites and port infrastructure connected to Ukraine’s war effort.
Ukrainian authorities, however, reported damage to residential buildings, a school, a medical facility and other civilian infrastructure.
The competing accounts do not independently establish the circumstances surrounding every individual strike.
Moldova Reports Drones in Its Airspace
The effects of the overnight attacks were also reported beyond Ukraine.
Moldova’s Defense Ministry said five drones entered Moldovan airspace during the night but did not immediately identify who launched them. Moldova borders Ukraine and has faced increasing concerns about the war’s spillover effects.
The reported incursions underscore the potential for continued aerial operations around Ukraine to affect neighboring states, although details of the incidents remained unclear.
Ukraine Continues Long-Range Attacks
The Russian barrage came as Ukraine continued its own long-range strikes against targets inside Russia.
Ukraine’s General Staff said its forces struck Russian command posts near Donetsk using aircraft-launched missiles. Russia separately said its air defenses intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones across several Russian regions and surrounding waters.
The latest exchange reflects the increasingly broad use of long-range weapons by both sides against military infrastructure, energy facilities, logistics networks and industrial sites.
Air War Intensifies as Diplomacy Remains Unresolved
The latest barrage comes amid a broader intensification of the Russia-Ukraine air war. Russia has continued large-scale drone and missile attacks, while Ukraine has expanded its use of long-range drones and Western-supplied missiles against targets in Russian-controlled territory and Russia itself.
Ukraine’s reported shortage of advanced air-defense interceptors remains a significant concern as Moscow continues launching large numbers of weapons. The attacks are occurring while diplomatic efforts to end the war remain unresolved.
Further casualty figures and damage assessments were expected as emergency crews continued operations. Authorities had not provided a complete independently verified account of the damage from every strike by the time of the initial reports.
