Russia and North Korea have opened their first road crossing between the two countries. The new link runs across the Tumen River and creates a year-round route for vehicles.
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song joined the September 7 opening ceremony by video link. The bridge connects Russia’s Khasan area in Primorsky Krai with North Korean territory near Rason.
The two countries already had a railway link across the river. Russian officials said that connection was not enough to meet their transport needs.
New Road Link Across the Tumen River
The bridge is about 1 kilometer long and two lanes wide. It forms part of a larger border project that includes new facilities on the Russian side.
Russia said the Khasan crossing has 10 traffic lanes. The facility is expected to handle up to 300 vehicles and 2,325 people a day. Officials also said the site can be expanded later.
The bridge is named the Yakov Novichenko Bridge. Novichenko was a Soviet Red Army officer who is honored in North Korea for protecting Kim Il Sung from a grenade in 1946.
Moscow has presented the project mainly as an economic and transport development. Mishustin said it would increase freight capacity and lower transport costs. He also linked the bridge to trade, tourism, cultural ties, and scientific and technology cooperation.
Project Agreed During Putin’s 2024 Visit
Russia and North Korea agreed to build the bridge during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s June 2024 visit to North Korea.

Construction began on April 30, 2025. Russian and North Korean officials launched the project together.

The main importance of the project is its new road link.
Russia and North Korea already share the Friendship Bridge, which carries rail traffic across the Tumen River. Until now, however, they had no dedicated road crossing.

The bridge opens as Russia and North Korea continue to strengthen their political and security ties.

Mishustin said Russia’s relationship with North Korea had reached an unprecedented level of comprehensive strategic partnership. He also linked the bridge to cooperation under their bilateral treaty.
Pak called the bridge a symbol of the countries’ traditional friendship. He said it would support economic development and closer bilateral cooperation.
The bridge’s name also reinforces the historical ties highlighted by both governments. Novichenko is remembered in North Korea for his role in protecting Kim Il Sung.
Capacity Will Depend on Actual Traffic
The completed bridge gives Russia and North Korea a new route for cross-border trade and travel. Its long-term impact, however, will depend on how much traffic it carries.
Several factors will matter. These include the opening of the border facilities, the volume of commercial traffic and the growth of tourism and passenger travel.
For Russia, the project adds transport capacity in the Far East.

The opening of the Yakov Novichenko Bridge is both a transport milestone and a visible sign of closer Russia-North Korea ties.
