Google announces its biggest AI infrastructure project outside the United States, committing $15 billion to build a state-of-the-art data and cloud hub in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh.

Major Investment to Strengthen Global AI Footprint

Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, will invest $15 billion (₤11.29 billion) to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) data hub in the port city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The new facility will become part of Google’s expanding network of AI centers across 12 countries, marking a pivotal step in its long-term infrastructure growth strategy.

At a press event in New Delhi, Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, called the project “the largest AI hub we are investing in anywhere outside the United States.” He added that the investment would roll out over five years, emphasizing India’s importance as a growing technology ecosystem.

India’s Rising Role in Global AI and Cloud Infrastructure

The investment highlights India’s emergence as a key destination for AI data centers, driven by its low data costs, strong digital infrastructure, and expanding internet user base.
The country’s favorable business environment has encouraged major technology companies to build cloud and AI facilities to serve both local and international clients.

According to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, the new Visakhapatnam center will “bring Google’s industry-leading technology to Indian enterprises and users, accelerating AI innovation and driving inclusive economic growth.”

Government Partnership and Digital Expansion Plans

The Andhra Pradesh government confirmed that a formal agreement finalizing the project will be signed this week.
“It is a massive leap for our state’s digital future, innovation, and global standing,” said Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Technology.

The data hub will integrate AI infrastructure, cloud computing systems, and renewable energy to ensure sustainable operations. The facility will also link to an expanded fiber-optic network, reinforcing India’s ambitions to lead in digital infrastructure across Asia.

Aligning with State and National Goals

Bloomberg reported that the project aligns with Andhra Pradesh’s broader plan to develop 6 gigawatts (GW) of data center capacity by 2029. The state government has also introduced land and electricity subsidies to attract foreign investors and accelerate high-tech infrastructure development.

India’s data center industry has nearly tripled its capacity since 2019, surpassing 1GW in 2024, according to the JLL India Data Centre Market Dynamics 2024 report. Analysts say this growth reflects a surge in cloud adoption, artificial intelligence applications, and enterprise digitalization.

Inside the AI Data Hub: Scale and Sustainability

The planned facility will house advanced servers, network systems, and AI training hardware used to process and store massive volumes of data.
Each center requires extensive cooling, energy, and cybersecurity systems, making them among the most critical assets in the digital economy.

The Andhra Pradesh project will reportedly combine cloud infrastructure with green energy sources, underscoring Google’s commitment to carbon-neutral operations and long-term sustainability.

Strategic Timing Amid Global Investment Shifts

The announcement comes amid renewed calls from U.S. political leaders, including former President Donald Trump, urging American tech companies to prioritize domestic investment. Despite such pressures, Google continues to expand globally to meet surging international demand for AI computing power.

Industry analysts note that the Visakhapatnam hub could serve as a gateway for AI services across South and Southeast Asia, providing localized cloud solutions for emerging markets.
