Basketball Hall of Famer Rick Adelman, one of the most successful coaches in NBA history, has died at the age of 79, according to an announcement by the National Basketball Coaches Association.
Adelman built a coaching career that spanned more than two decades and produced 1,042 regular-season victories, placing him among the winningest coaches the league has seen. His death marks the loss of a respected figure whose influence extended across multiple NBA franchises and generations of players.
Career Defined by Consistent Success
After playing seven seasons in the NBA as a point guard, Adelman transitioned into coaching and eventually became known for his ability to guide teams to sustained success.
He served as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves. Across 23 seasons as an NBA head coach, Adelman reached the playoffs 16 times while compiling a career record that ranks among the league’s best.
His greatest postseason achievements came with Portland, where he led the Trail Blazers to NBA Finals appearances in 1990 and 1992. Adelman later became one of the defining figures in Sacramento basketball history during his tenure with the Kings.
Hall of Fame Recognition
Adelman’s accomplishments earned him induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
The National Basketball Coaches Association also recognized his impact on the game by presenting him with the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. The organization said Adelman would be remembered not only for his work as a coach and player but also for his role as a mentor within the basketball community.

The Sacramento Kings praised the former coach for the way he inspired those around him through teamwork and leadership, while the Denver Nuggets expressed sadness following the passing of the father of current Nuggets head coach David Adelman.
The National Basketball Coaches Association described Adelman as a legendary coach whose impact reached far beyond wins and losses.
A cause of death was not immediately announced. Adelman is survived by his family, including his son David, who currently serves as head coach of the Denver Nuggets.
