The San Antonio Spurs advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014 after defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on Saturday night.
Facing the defending NBA champions on the road, San Antonio delivered a composed performance in the deciding game of the series to claim the Western Conference title and move within four wins of a championship. The Spurs will face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with 22 points and seven rebounds, continuing a postseason run that has helped drive the franchise back into championship contention. Julian Champagnie added 20 points, including six three-pointers, while several Spurs contributors reached double figures in a balanced offensive effort.
Spurs Respond to Thunder Challenges
Oklahoma City remained within striking distance throughout much of the contest behind another standout performance from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 35 points and nine assists.
The Thunder attempted to build momentum during key stretches of the second half, but San Antonio repeatedly answered. A late defensive sequence involving backup center Luke Kornet proved significant after Wembanyama fouled out, helping the Spurs preserve their lead during a crucial period of the fourth quarter.
San Antonio’s depth also played a major role in the victory. Contributions from Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson helped offset Oklahoma City’s offensive pressure as the game entered its closing minutes.
Thunder’s Repeat Bid Comes to an End
The loss ended Oklahoma City’s pursuit of consecutive NBA championships after a season that once again placed the Thunder among the league’s top contenders.
Despite Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring output, the Thunder were unable to overcome San Antonio’s collective performance. Oklahoma City also entered the game without a full-strength rotation, and the team could not generate enough support offensively to complete a comeback.
The series featured several momentum swings. Oklahoma City took a 3-2 lead after winning Game 5, but San Antonio responded with a 118-91 victory in Game 6 to force a decisive seventh game.
NBA Finals Matchup Set
The victory marks San Antonio’s first Western Conference championship in more than a decade and continues the franchise’s resurgence around its young core.
The Spurs will now prepare for a Finals matchup against the Knicks, who secured the Eastern Conference title earlier in the postseason. Game 1 of the NBA Finals is scheduled for June 3.
For Oklahoma City, the season ends one step short of another Finals appearance. For San Antonio, the path continues with an opportunity to capture the franchise’s first NBA championship since 2014.
