Zelenskyy Refuses Peace Talks Without Security Guarantees Amid Tense Meeting With Trump

Ukraine Stands Firm Against Russia Without Security Assurances

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made it clear that his country will not engage in peace talks with Russia unless it receives strong security guarantees to prevent future aggression. His remarks came amid escalating tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has insisted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to end the war.

Zelenskyy dismissed Trump’s claim, emphasizing that Ukraine cannot afford to change its stance on Russia overnight and highlighting Moscow’s history of broken commitments.

Trump-Zelenskyy Clash in Heated White House Meeting

What was expected to be a diplomatic meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy on Friday quickly spiraled into a public confrontation in the Oval Office.

Trump berated Zelenskyy for being “disrespectful”, then abruptly called off a minerals deal that was supposed to strengthen U.S.-Ukraine relations. The deal, which would have given the U.S. access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, was touted by Trump as a key step toward ending the war—but was ultimately scrapped following the heated exchange.

Key Moments From the Meeting:

  • Trump lashed out at Zelenskyy, accusing him of “gambling with World War III” and failing to show gratitude for U.S. support.
  • Zelenskyy warned that Putin cannot be trusted, citing Russia’s repeated violations of ceasefires and agreements.
  • Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy, telling him, “With respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media.”
  • Trump downplayed Ukraine’s concerns, stating, “Putin has not broken agreements with me.”
  • Trump questioned Zelenskyy’s attitude toward Putin, saying, “That’s very tough for me to make a deal with that kind of hate.”

As tensions flared, the White House abruptly ended the meeting, with the Ukrainian delegation told to leave. Zelenskyy’s scheduled press conference and deal signing were both canceled.

Trump Declares Zelenskyy “Not Ready for Peace”

Following the clash, Trump took to social media to criticize Zelenskyy, writing:

“He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Trump later told reporters that he wants an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine but doubted whether Zelenskyy was willing to negotiate.

Democrats Slam Trump’s Actions

The fallout sparked immediate backlash from Democrats, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer accusing Trump and Vance of “doing Putin’s dirty work” by undermining Ukraine’s position.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally who supports continued aid to Ukraine, expressed doubt about the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations, stating:

“I don’t know if you can ever do a deal with Zelenskyy anymore.”

Zelenskyy Responds: “Thank You, America”

Despite the tense encounter, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude toward the U.S. after leaving the White House.

In a social media post, he wrote:

“Thank you, America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit.
Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”

However, White House officials remained frustrated with Zelenskyy’s tone and body language, viewing his push for security guarantees as an unnecessary complication in what Trump wanted to focus on—the minerals deal.

Fears Over Trump’s Approach to Russia

The contentious meeting intensified fears that Trump could strike a deal with Russia at Ukraine’s expense.

Recent unprecedented diplomatic moves by Trump have fueled concerns:

  • He held a lengthy phone call with Putin, bypassing Ukraine and European allies.
  • U.S. officials met with Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia, again without Ukrainian or European participation.
  • Trump blamed Ukraine for prolonging the war and falsely called Zelenskyy a “dictator” for postponing elections—despite Ukraine’s martial law preventing them.

European Leaders Rally Behind Ukraine

Following the Oval Office debacle, European leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine:

  • EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised Zelenskyy, writing:

“Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone.”

  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for an urgent U.S.-Europe summit, warning:

“Every division in the West makes us weaker and favors those who seek our decline.”

The Bigger Picture: A Fragile Moment for Ukraine’s Future

As Ukraine fights against Russia’s slow but steady military advances, Zelenskyy’s push for security guarantees is aimed at preventing another Russian invasion after the war ends. Many Ukrainians fear that a hastily negotiated peace—especially one favoring Russia—could allow Moscow to regroup and strike again.

With Trump signaling a potential shift in U.S. policy, Ukraine’s future hangs in the balance.
