The 2026 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominations bring together some of the most influential voices in modern music, from pop icon Taylor Swift to hip-hop pioneer LL Cool J and art-rock legend David Byrne. This year’s ballot, announced in New York, celebrates an eclectic mix of genres, highlighting decades of creative influence across the global music industry.

A Diverse Field of Music Legends

The nominees span generations and styles — including Kenny Loggins, Pink, Sarah McLachlan, and The Go-Go’s Charlotte Caffey, Kathy Valentine, and Jane Wiedlin. Each artist has left a distinct mark on pop, rock, and folk music, contributing enduring songs that shaped their respective eras.

Also up for induction are Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings of The Guess Who, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, and Kiss co-founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Their nomination follows the recent death of Kiss’s original lead guitarist Ace Frehley, who passed away on October 16 in New Jersey at the age of 74.

Other notable nominees include Richard Carpenter of The Carpenters, whose classic hits such as Top of the World and Yesterday Once More remain radio staples, and Harry Wayne Casey — better known as KC of KC and the Sunshine Band — whose disco-era anthems That’s The Way (I Like It) and Shake Your Booty defined the 1970s dance scene. Guitarist and vocalist Boz Scaggs, known for Lowdown and Lido Shuffle, also joins the ballot.

Celebrating the Craft Behind the Hits

The Songwriters Hall of Fame doesn’t just honor performers. Each year, it also recognizes non-performing writers whose compositions have shaped global music culture.

Among those nominated for the non-performer category in 2026 is Pete Bellotte, celebrated for his work with Donna Summer on hits such as Hot Stuff and I Feel Love. Swedish producer Andreas Carlsson, a key figure behind the Cheiron Studios sound that dominated late-1990s pop with acts like Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, is also nominated.

Other songwriting icons in this category include Steve Kipner, who penned Physical for Olivia Newton-John and Genie in a Bottle for Christina Aguilera, and longtime Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard, co-writer of Like a Prayer and Live to Tell.

Additional contenders include Vini Poncia (Do I Love You? by The Ronettes), Martin Page (We Built This City by Starship), and the team of Terry Britten and Graham Lyle, who wrote Tina Turner’s Grammy-winning What’s Love Got to Do With It.

Country, R&B, and Returning Nominees

Representing the country music field are Jeffrey Steele (What Hurts the Most), Don Williams (Good Ole Boys Like Me), and Larry Weiss (Rhinestone Cowboy).

R&B and pop songwriters are equally well represented, with Tom Snow (Let’s Hear It for the Boy, He’s So Shy) and Christopher “Tricky” Stewart (Umbrella, Single Ladies, Break My Soul) joining the list.

Some artists are making another appearance on the ballot, including producer Walter Afanasieff — best known for co-writing Mariah Carey’s perennial hit All I Want for Christmas Is You. Returning nominees also include The Guess Who’s Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings, along with country songwriter Bob McDill (Everything That Glitters Is Not Gold).

Voting and Induction Details

Voting members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame have until midnight Eastern Time on December 4 to select up to three nominees from each category — songwriter and performer-songwriter.

The final inductees will be revealed in early 2026, followed by an annual gala ceremony in New York City celebrating the class of honorees.

Honoring a Legacy of Musical Storytelling

Founded in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame recognizes the creators behind the world’s most enduring songs. Eligibility requires a 20-year history since a songwriter’s first commercial release, ensuring that nominees have demonstrated long-term impact and influence.

Past inductees include Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Carole King, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, and more recently, George Clinton, The Doobie Brothers, and The Beach Boys’ Mike Love.

The 2026 class continues this legacy, spotlighting songwriters who have defined pop culture, inspired generations of musicians, and expanded the boundaries of modern songwriting.
