TOKYO, Japan –  Japanese automakers Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. have signed an agreement to jointly develop and standardize key computer systems and software for their next-generation vehicles, deepening a technology partnership that began in 2024.

Under the agreement announced Monday, the companies will develop common specifications for multiple electronic control units (ECUs), the in-vehicle operating system, parts of the middleware and vehicle-control software. The jointly developed electrical and electronic architecture is planned for use in both companies’ next-generation software-defined vehicles from fiscal 2029 onward.

The agreement does not announce specific vehicle models or limit the technology to electric vehicles. Instead, it focuses on the underlying software and computer architecture that will increasingly determine how modern vehicles operate, communicate and receive new functions.

Cars are becoming software platforms

Software-defined vehicles, or SDVs, rely increasingly on centralized computing, software and connectivity rather than having every vehicle function controlled by separate hardware systems.

That architecture can allow manufacturers to introduce or improve features through software updates and integrate technologies such as advanced driver assistance, connectivity and artificial intelligence.

Nissan and Honda said software has become an important source of competitiveness as vehicle intelligence and electrification develop rapidly.

The companies expect standardizing core technologies to reduce duplicated development work and make more efficient use of their engineering resources.

Companies will share core vehicle technology

The agreement covers several layers of the vehicles’ electronic architecture.

Nissan and Honda will establish common specifications for high-performance main ECUs and zone ECUs, which manage different areas of a vehicle.

They will also work together on the operating system and selected middleware that connects software components, as well as software responsible for vehicle control.

The companies say this common foundation should allow them to combine engineering expertise and development resources while reducing costs.

Greater production scale could also lower the cost of the components and systems once they are deployed across vehicles.

Collaboration began with electric and intelligent vehicles

The latest agreement builds on cooperation that began in March 2024, when Nissan and Honda announced a feasibility study for a strategic partnership focused on vehicle electrification and intelligence.

The initial discussions included automotive software platforms and core EV components.

In August 2024, the companies agreed to conduct joint research into fundamental technologies for next-generation software-defined vehicle platforms. Mitsubishi Motors also joined the broader strategic partnership discussions.

The latest agreement turns that earlier research into a more specific joint-development program.

Partnership continues despite failed merger

The cooperation also comes more than a year after Nissan and Honda abandoned discussions over a potential business integration.

The two companies had signed an agreement in December 2024 to consider establishing a joint holding company, but the proposed combination was ultimately abandoned in early 2025.

The collapse of the merger did not end their strategic cooperation.

Instead, Nissan and Honda have continued to identify individual areas where sharing technology and development costs could strengthen both companies.

The software agreement is one of the clearest examples of that approach.

Chinese automakers increase pressure

The agreement comes as Japanese automakers face growing competition from Chinese manufacturers that have moved quickly in electric vehicles, connected-car technology and automotive software.

Companies such as BYD have expanded internationally with vehicles featuring increasingly sophisticated software and digital functions.

That competition is putting pressure on established automakers to develop software more quickly and reduce the cost of creating new vehicle platforms.

For Nissan and Honda, sharing foundational technology could help them avoid duplicating expensive research and development.

Nissan and Honda remain separate companies

The agreement does not create a merger or combine the companies into a single automaker.

Nissan and Honda will continue operating independently and developing their own vehicles and products.

The companies are instead sharing selected technologies that can be used as a common foundation.

That distinction allows both automakers to preserve their individual brands while cooperating in areas where scale and shared development could provide an advantage.

Mitsubishi could have a role

Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan’s alliance partner, is also considering whether to participate in the broader software collaboration.

Reuters reported that Mitsubishi remains in discussions with Nissan and Honda about potential areas of cooperation.

No final decision on Mitsubishi’s participation in the new software-development agreement was included in Monday’s announcement.

The first vehicles are planned from 2029

The jointly developed architecture is scheduled to begin appearing in next-generation vehicles from fiscal 2029, which in Japan begins in April 2029.

That timetable gives the companies several years to complete development, testing and integration.

The technology will therefore not immediately change vehicles currently on sale.

Instead, the agreement is aimed at establishing the technical foundation for a future generation of Nissan and Honda vehicles.

Beyond software

Nissan and Honda said their strategic partnership will continue to explore other areas.

The companies have identified technologies related to carbon neutrality, electrification and reducing traffic fatalities as potential areas for further cooperation.

That leaves open the possibility of additional joint projects even though the latest agreement is specifically focused on software-defined vehicle technology.

A broader shift in the auto industry

The Nissan-Honda agreement reflects a broader transformation in the automobile industry.

Automakers increasingly compete not only on engines, batteries and vehicle design but also on operating systems, computing power, connectivity, artificial intelligence and the ability to deliver software updates.

That shift is forcing traditional manufacturers to invest heavily in technologies that were previously outside the core of automobile development.

For Nissan and Honda, the latest partnership is an attempt to combine resources at a time when those investments are becoming increasingly expensive.

What Happens Next

Nissan and Honda will proceed with joint development and standardization of their next-generation vehicle computers and software.

The jointly developed architecture is planned for vehicles beginning in fiscal 2029.

The companies will also continue examining additional opportunities for cooperation, while Mitsubishi Motors considers whether to participate in parts of the broader technology collaboration.
