According to police statements cited by Reuters, a fatal Taipei attack left four people dead, including the suspected assailant, with authorities stating the individual appeared to have acted alone. The incident occurred in central Taipei on Friday evening, and investigations into the motive remain ongoing.
Investigation Details
Police identified the suspect as Chang Wen, 27, from Taoyuan. Authorities said he died after falling from a building during a police pursuit following the attack.
National Police Agency Director-General Chang Jung-hsin told reporters that, based on ongoing verification efforts, investigators had not found evidence of accomplices. Authorities said the suspect allegedly used a smoke device and a knife during the incident.
Police said the suspect first released smoke devices at Taipei’s main train station before moving toward a nearby shopping mall connected to a subway station. According to investigators, the suspect allegedly attacked individuals both en route and inside the commercial complex.
Casualties and Public Safety Response
Health authorities said 11 people were injured in the incident, with two in intensive care as of the latest update.
Officials noted that violent crime is relatively uncommon in Taiwan. In response, law enforcement agencies have increased security measures across Taipei, particularly in high-traffic commercial districts.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an said police presence would be expanded citywide, including deploying additional officers and ensuring they are equipped for rapid response.
Background and Legal Context
Premier Cho Jung-tai said the suspect had been subject to an arrest warrant prior to the incident, reportedly related to alleged evasion of Taiwan’s compulsory military service. Authorities have not indicated whether this was connected to the attack.
President Lai Ching-te visited some of the injured in hospital and said the government would review the incident to strengthen emergency response systems. He stated that rapid-response units would be further developed to improve public safety preparedness.
Ongoing Investigation
Police said inquiries into the suspect’s background and possible motives are continuing. Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the attack.
