FLORIDA, United States – A U.S. federal investigation is examining evidence that a Learjet 60 may have begun breaking apart before it crashed in Florida, killing all nine people aboard.

The aircraft went down on November 1, 2026, in Palm Beach County while flying from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash, which remains ongoing. <Cite refs={[“turn318284view0″,”turn244062search2”]}/>

NTSB board member Tom Chapman said investigators had found indications that the aircraft began breaking apart before impact. He said debris could be located some distance from the main crash site, according to reporting from the Associated Press.

Investigators have not determined what caused the aircraft to lose control or whether a structural failure occurred before impact. The NTSB has not announced a probable cause.

NTSB Examines Possible In-Flight Breakup

The NTSB is leading the investigation into the Learjet 60, operated by Aurora Aviation under the name Upper Jet.

The aircraft lost radar and radio contact while traveling from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the NTSB’s investigation record. The agency lists the accident date as November 1 and the investigation status as ongoing. <Cite refs={[“turn318284view0”]}/>

At a November 2 news conference, Chapman said investigators had indications of a possible breakup before the aircraft struck the ground. The investigation team expects to examine debris beyond the immediate impact area.

The NTSB has not established whether the aircraft suffered a structural failure, mechanical problem or another emergency. Investigators must examine the wreckage and other available evidence before drawing conclusions.

Crew Reported Ice and Turbulence

Air traffic control recordings cited by the Associated Press indicate that the crew reported icing and moderate turbulence while flying at about 35,000 feet.

The pilot described light, clear ice and turbulence. The crew then requested permission to climb to a higher altitude.

The situation deteriorated rapidly. The pilot declared an emergency and reported a steep descent, with the aircraft’s rate of descent reaching about 20,000 feet per minute in the final moments before the crash, according to the recordings cited in the AP report.

Weather conditions are a major focus of the investigation. However, investigators have not said whether icing or turbulence caused or contributed to the accident.

Nine People Killed in Palm Beach County

All nine people aboard the Learjet died in the crash. The aircraft struck a residential area in Palm Beach County and caused a fire and a large debris field.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that nine people were on board. Its initial accident notice identified the aircraft as a Learjet 60 that departed Austin and was bound for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The FAA said the NTSB would lead the investigation and provide updates. <Cite refs={[“turn244062search2”]}/>

The crash also affected people living near the impact area. Local authorities evacuated residents from nearby mobile homes while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.

The Associated Press reported that a person on the ground sustained a leg injury. Investigators and local authorities have not established any broader casualty figures among people outside the aircraft.

Investigators to Examine Wreckage and Flight Records

The NTSB has begun documenting the crash site and recovering aircraft wreckage. The agency is also examining whether a cockpit voice recorder was aboard and whether investigators can recover it, according to the AP report.

The investigation will examine the aircraft’s condition, maintenance history, weather exposure and flight crew communications. Investigators may also review available video and interview witnesses.

The NTSB has cautioned that its investigation is at an early stage. Its findings may change as the team collects and analyzes evidence.

Cause of Crash Remains Undetermined

The possible in-flight breakup is one of several issues investigators must examine. The crew’s reports of icing, turbulence and a rapid descent provide important evidence, but they do not establish the cause.

The NTSB will need to determine the sequence of events leading to the loss of control and the aircraft’s impact. That process may include detailed examinations of recovered components and flight records.

Until the agency releases further findings, the cause of the crash remains undetermined. The investigation will establish whether aircraft condition, weather, operational factors or a combination of circumstances contributed to the fatal accident.
