At least 12 people have been killed and thousands more displaced after torrential rain and severe flooding swept across parts of China, with authorities launching large-scale rescue and evacuation operations in several provinces.
According to state media and international reports, the heaviest damage has been reported in the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, and Guizhou, where record rainfall submerged roads, damaged homes, and disrupted transportation and communications networks.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said five people died and 11 others remained missing in Shimen County in Hunan Province after intense rainfall battered the region. Officials said more than 19,000 residents had been relocated by Tuesday evening as rescue operations continued.
Record Rainfall Overwhelms Communities
Authorities reported that parts of Hunan received more than 339 millimeters of rain within a 24-hour period, with some towns experiencing historically unprecedented downpours within only a few hours. Floodwaters inundated residential neighborhoods and forced emergency crews to evacuate trapped residents using inflatable boats.
In neighboring Hubei Province, flooded streets were transformed into fast-moving waterways, while several houses reportedly collapsed under the impact of the storms. State media said at least three people were killed and four others were missing in the province.
Meanwhile, authorities in Guizhou Province confirmed four deaths and several missing persons after severe flooding damaged infrastructure and cut communications in mountainous communities. Thousands of residents were moved to temporary shelters as emergency services expanded rescue efforts.
Emergency Response Expands
Chinese emergency personnel, including firefighters and rescue teams, have been deployed across affected regions as officials warn that additional rainfall may continue in the coming days. Video footage broadcast by state media showed rescuers wading through chest-deep floodwaters and transporting stranded residents to safer areas.
Government agencies have reportedly allocated disaster relief funding to support emergency response and reconstruction efforts in flood-hit areas. Analysts noted that increasingly severe weather patterns are placing growing pressure on local infrastructure and disaster management systems across parts of China.
