Hong Kong Mogul Jimmy Lai Testifies in High-Stakes National Security Trial

Jimmy Lai, a prominent pro-democracy advocate and founder of the now-shuttered Hong Kong tabloid Apple Daily, took the stand on Wednesday in a closely watched national security trial. The 76-year-old media tycoon faces charges of colluding with foreign forces, accusations tied to his use of the media outlet to challenge the government.

If convicted, Lai could face life imprisonment. This trial marks the first time Lai has testified in court, despite enduring multiple legal proceedings since 2020. Observers widely view these cases as politically driven, coinciding with Beijing’s increasing control over Hong Kong.

In his testimony, Lai defended the mission of Apple Daily, describing it as a reflection of Hong Kong’s core values. He stated the publication stood for “freedom [and the] pursuit of democracy,” ideals that have become increasingly contentious in the city under the national security law.

Lai’s trial has drawn international attention, symbolizing the broader erosion of press freedom and democratic values in Hong Kong.
