ADEN, Yemen — Houthi forces have seized the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha, bringing the Iran-aligned group closer to the approaches of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and raising fresh concerns over international shipping.
The takeover on Thursday came during a renewed Houthi offensive against forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government. Yemeni military sources said Houthi forces had also advanced toward the Hanish Islands, further strengthening their position along the Red Sea coast.
The development marks the Houthis’ most significant territorial gain since the 2022 truce and threatens to deepen an already dangerous maritime security situation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The United Nations has warned that Yemen faces its greatest risk of renewed large-scale conflict since the truce. U.N. Special Envoy Hans Grundberg said recent Houthi attacks and expanding clashes could draw Yemen further into the wider regional confrontation.
Mocha brings Houthis closer to Bab el-Mandeb
Mocha lies roughly 80 kilometers from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the narrow waterway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. The passage is a critical route for commercial shipping moving between the Indian Ocean, the Suez Canal and European markets.
The Houthi advance therefore gives the group a stronger position near one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.
Yemeni government forces have withdrawn south from Mocha as they seek to regroup. Houthi forces have also advanced toward areas closer to the strait, according to Yemeni military sources.
The territorial gains come after weeks of intensified fighting between the Houthis and forces backed by Saudi Arabia. The renewed conflict has raised fears that the relative calm established by the 2022 truce could collapse into broader warfare.

Grundberg said in August that recent attacks around Mocha and other Yemeni front lines had already increased the risk of a return to large-scale conflict. He also warned that renewed attacks on commercial vessels could further entangle Yemen in the wider regional crisis.
Shipping faces renewed security pressure
The seizure comes after months of renewed attacks affecting vessels operating around Yemen.
The International Maritime Organization has condemned attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea and called for greater protection of seafarers and vessels. In August, the organization said a cargo ship was struck by a projectile off the coast of Al Mokha, with several seafarers killed.
The IMO continues to monitor incidents affecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Its reporting framework covers Houthi attacks on merchant and commercial vessels in the region.
The latest territorial advance adds a land-control dimension to the maritime threat. Control of more of Yemen’s western coastline could provide the Houthis with additional positions from which to threaten shipping, although the seizure of Mocha does not by itself mean that the group controls the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The risk is particularly significant because shipping operators are already dealing with disruption elsewhere in the region. The Strait of Hormuz has faced severe instability during the wider Middle East conflict, increasing the strategic importance of alternative routes through the Red Sea.
Yemen faces a wider military escalation
The fighting around Mocha is part of a broader deterioration inside Yemen.
The United Nations said recent Houthi attacks across several front lines had triggered increasingly intense clashes and warned of civilian casualties, displacement and damage to civilian infrastructure.
Grundberg has called for an immediate de-escalation and the restoration of calm along Yemen’s front lines. He has also urged an end to attacks and threats against shipping and called for freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden to be upheld.
The Security Council has previously warned that threats to navigation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden risk further regional escalation and undermine efforts to secure peace in Yemen.
For now, the seizure of Mocha leaves both Yemen’s internal conflict and the maritime security situation unresolved. The immediate question is whether Houthi forces will consolidate their new position along the coast or continue advancing toward the Bab el-Mandeb approaches.
Any further disruption to shipping could add pressure to already strained regional trade and energy routes, while renewed fighting inside Yemen could further weaken prospects for a negotiated settlement.
