FAIRFORD, United Kingdom – British counter-terrorism police are investigating whether five men arrested near RAF Fairford were preparing an attack on the military base, while examining a possible connection to Iran.

The men were arrested early Sunday in the nearby Whelford area after police received a report about three suspicious vehicles apparently traveling toward the airfield. They were initially detained under the Explosives Act and later arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.

The investigation remains at an early stage. British authorities have not publicly established who was behind the suspected plot, whether it was directed by a state, or what the intended target was.

Counter-terrorism investigators are examining a possible Iranian connection, according to people familiar with the investigation cited by British and international media. Other possibilities have not been ruled out.

Arrests followed report of suspicious vehicles

Gloucestershire Police said officers received a call at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday reporting three suspicious vehicles traveling toward RAF Fairford.

Armed officers responded and arrested five men in Whelford, a village close to the base.

The men remained in custody Monday while Counter Terrorism Policing led the investigation. Police said the investigation was still in its early stages and that officers were working with partner agencies to establish the circumstances.

A 400-meter cordon was established around the vehicles while the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit examined them.

About 85 households were evacuated as a precaution while the examination took place. Police said the incident was contained and urged residents not to speculate while investigators established the facts.

The arrests themselves do not establish that an attack was imminent or that the suspects had successfully entered the military installation.

Why RAF Fairford matters

RAF Fairford is a British-owned military base in Gloucestershire that hosts U.S. Air Force operations.

The base is home to the U.S. Air Force’s 501st Combat Support Wing and has long been used for American strategic bomber deployments.

Its role became particularly significant after the United States began military operations against Iran in February. The British government subsequently authorized U.S. use of RAF Fairford for specified operations against Iranian missile capabilities. A U.K. government statement said the first U.S. bomber under that arrangement arrived at Fairford in March.

U.S. B-1 and B-2 bombers have operated from the base during the conflict, making Fairford a visible part of the U.S. military presence involved in the war.

That history is relevant to investigators examining a possible Iranian connection, but it does not by itself establish a motive for the five men.

Iran connection remains unconfirmed

British counter-terrorism investigators are reportedly examining whether the suspected plot could have been connected to Iran.

The investigation comes after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps previously warned that British bases used by U.S. forces for attacks against Iran could be considered legitimate military targets.

That provides a documented security context around Fairford.

It does not establish that Iranian authorities ordered or supported the activity that led to Sunday’s arrests.

The Associated Press reported that investigators were considering possible links to Iran, Russia or non-state militant groups and had not concluded whether the incident was state-backed.

British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also cautioned against drawing conclusions about the suspects’ motives while the investigation was continuing, saying it was too early to attribute the background aims of the incident.

Explosives examination continues

The Army’s specialist explosive-ordnance personnel were deployed to examine the vehicles.

Police have not publicly provided a detailed description of what, if anything, was found inside them, nor have authorities released the identities, nationalities or alleged affiliations of the five men.

That leaves several important questions unresolved, including whether the vehicles contained operational explosives, whether the suspects intended to reach the base itself, and whether the activity was coordinated with anyone outside Britain.

The distinction is important because an arrest on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act is not a finding of guilt.

The investigation must still establish what the men were doing, what they intended to do and whether any wider organization was involved.

U.S. personnel remain on security alert

The U.S. military said personnel at Fairford remained vigilant but did not disclose specific force-protection measures.

U.S. European Command said it would take appropriate measures to protect American service members, civilians, contractors and their families across Europe. The U.S. Embassy in London also urged Americans in Britain to remain cautious about their personal security.

The security response around Fairford was visible on Sunday, with armed police deployed and roads around the base restricted.

The evacuation of nearby residents was a precaution while specialists assessed the vehicles rather than an indication that an attack had occurred.

Investigation comes amid wider concern over hostile-state activity

The Fairford investigation comes amid heightened British concern about activity linked to foreign states.

British authorities have previously accused Iranian-linked networks of involvement in attempted acts of violence and sabotage in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe. Security officials have also warned about Russian activity and the use of intermediaries or proxies.

Those broader concerns form part of the security environment surrounding the current investigation, but they do not identify the perpetrators in the Fairford case.

The British government has also faced the challenge of balancing its military cooperation with the United States against the risk of retaliation connected to the Iran conflict.

RAF Fairford is particularly sensitive because it is a British installation used by the U.S. military for operations connected to the conflict.

Police urge public to wait for evidence

The immediate facts are narrower than some of the speculation surrounding the arrests.

Five men are in custody.

Police received a report about three suspicious vehicles near the base.

The vehicles were examined by specialist explosives personnel.

A major incident was declared, a security cordon established and nearby residents temporarily evacuated.

Counter-terrorism officers are investigating whether the men were preparing a terrorist act.

Beyond those facts, the investigation remains open.

The possible Iranian connection is one line of inquiry rather than a confirmed attribution. Police have not announced that Iran directed the suspects, and no Iranian authority has been identified as responsible for the incident.

That distinction will remain important as investigators examine the vehicles, interview the suspects and determine whether evidence connects the activity to a wider network.

For now, the arrests have heightened security around one of Britain’s most strategically important U.S.-used air bases, but the circumstances and motive behind the suspected plot have yet to be established.
