Biden Faces Aggressive Cancer Diagnosis at Age 82

Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer, Cancer Has Spread to Bones

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones, according to a statement released Sunday by his personal office.

The 82-year-old was reportedly evaluated after experiencing worsening urinary symptoms. Medical tests revealed a prostate nodule and, ultimately, a diagnosis of prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 — indicating the most aggressive type. The cancer has metastasized to the bone but is said to be hormone-sensitive, meaning treatment is still possible.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” the statement said.

Reviewing Treatment Options

Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment plans with his medical team. Although no specific treatment facility has been confirmed, sources say he is resting at home in Wilmington, Delaware.

This development comes just days after Biden’s team confirmed he had undergone testing for a small prostate nodule. Urologists unaffiliated with Biden’s care noted that prostate cancer is common among older men, but the Gleason score of 9 signals a very serious case.

“A Gleason score of 9 means it’s the most aggressive form of prostate cancer,” said Dr. Benjamin Davies of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Despite the gravity of the diagnosis, experts say newer treatments — including advanced hormone therapy and chemotherapy — offer hope.

“There is some good news,” said Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist with Orlando Health. “Even patients with high-risk prostate cancer can live normal, good-quality lives if the cancer is treated properly.”

Health Concerns Shadowed Biden’s Final Year in Office

Biden’s health had been a topic of public debate throughout his presidency, particularly during the 2024 election season. In February 2024, he was declared “fit for duty” after a physical at Walter Reed, but questions persisted — especially after a shaky debate performance against Donald Trump and allegations in a new book that described cognitive decline.

CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson reported that Biden’s aides were growing increasingly concerned about his condition, including moments when he allegedly failed to recognize actor George Clooney at a June 2024 fundraiser.

Biden denied those claims earlier this month during an appearance on The View, where he pushed back on the suggestion of cognitive decline.

“They are wrong. There is nothing to sustain that,” he said.

His wife, Jill Biden, added, “He worked hard every single day. People didn’t see how dedicated he was behind the scenes.”

Political Rivals and Allies Send Support

Despite a history of political jabs, former President Donald Trump put aside partisan rivalry to offer support.

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who took over the Democratic campaign after Biden exited the 2024 race, also expressed support.

“Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” she wrote on X.

Cancer is Deeply Personal for Biden

This isn’t Biden’s first encounter with the pain of cancer. His son, Beau Biden, died from brain cancer in 2015. The tragedy spurred Biden to launch the Cancer Moonshot initiative, aiming to significantly reduce cancer deaths and provide better support for patients and families.

“It’s not just personal — it’s about what’s possible,” Biden said in August 2023.

As the former president now faces his own battle, Americans from across the political spectrum are watching closely, hoping he can fight through — just as he’s inspired many to do before.
