Goodbye Skype, Hello Teams: Microsoft’s Next Step in Communication

The Next Chapter: Transitioning from Skype to Microsoft Teams

Embracing the Future of Communication

Communication has evolved dramatically over the years—from instant messaging to video calls, technology has continuously reshaped how we connect. Now, Microsoft is taking the next step in this journey by retiring Skype in May 2025 and shifting focus to Microsoft Teams (free), a modern hub for communication and collaboration.

Why Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams offers many of the same core features Skype users love, including:
One-on-one and group calls
Instant messaging
File sharing

In addition, Teams brings enhanced capabilities like:
Hosting meetings
Managing calendars
Building and joining communities for free

With hundreds of millions of users worldwide, Teams has become a go-to platform for staying connected at work, school, and home. Over the past two years, the time spent in consumer meetings on Teams has increased fourfold, showcasing its growing value for communication and collaboration.

As we transition to Teams, we’re committed to making this shift seamless and beneficial for all users.

What’s Next for Skype Users?

During this transition, Skype users have two main options:

1️⃣ Move to Microsoft Teams (Free)

We are rolling out the ability for Skype users to sign into Teams using their Skype credentials—starting today for those in the Teams and Skype Insider programs.

Seamless transition: Once logged into Teams with a Skype account, all chats and contacts will automatically appear, allowing users to continue conversations effortlessly.
Cross-platform communication: Skype and Teams users can chat and call each other during the transition, ensuring uninterrupted connections.

2️⃣ Export Your Skype Data

If you prefer not to migrate to Teams, you can export your chat history, contacts, and call logs for future reference.

Skype will remain available until May 5, 2025, providing ample time to explore Teams and decide on the best option for you.

How to Get Started with Microsoft Teams for Free

Making the switch to Teams is simple and does not prevent you from continuing to use Skype during the transition.

Follow these easy steps:

1️⃣ Download Teams on your device from the official Microsoft Teams website.
2️⃣ Log in using your Skype credentials.
3️⃣ Start using Teams—all your Skype chats and contacts will be ready for you!

To assist in this transition, we’ve prepared a step-by-step guide to help you get started and make the most of Teams’ features.

Changes to Skype Paid Features

New users will no longer be able to purchase Skype Credit or subscriptions for making international and domestic calls.
Existing Skype subscription users can continue using their credits and subscriptions until the end of their next renewal period.
After May 5, 2025, remaining paid users will still have access to the Skype Dial Pad via the Skype web portal and within Teams.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Skype Users

For years, Skype has been an essential part of modern communication, helping people connect across the world. We are grateful for the moments shared on Skype and honored to have been part of your journey.

We understand that change can be challenging, and we are here to support you every step of the way. Microsoft Teams brings new opportunities for seamless collaboration, and we look forward to helping you stay connected in more meaningful ways than ever before.

Thank you for being a part of Skype.
We’re excited for this next chapter with Microsoft Teams!
