After Tough Talks, US and Ukraine Agree on Critical Resources Deal - Kostiantyn Liberov/Libkos/Getty Images

US and Ukraine Reach Agreement on Natural Resources and Reconstruction Deal

Key Points:

  • The US and Ukraine have finalized terms on a deal involving natural resources and post-war reconstruction.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to visit Washington soon, possibly to sign the agreement.
  • Previous negotiations stalled over security guarantees and resource-sharing terms.
  • The final deal aims to strengthen Ukraine’s security and economic stability.

Agreement Reached After Intense Negotiations

The United States and Ukraine have reached an agreement on a crucial deal concerning natural resources and reconstruction, according to a Ukrainian official.

The official noted that the final terms were agreed upon after removing “everything unacceptable” from the draft. The updated agreement now provides clearer details on how it will contribute to Ukraine’s security and long-term peace.

While the US has yet to officially confirm the agreement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to visit Washington in the coming days.

Zelensky’s Washington Visit Expected

US President Donald Trump signaled his approval of Zelensky’s visit, stating from the Oval Office on Tuesday:

“I hear that he’s coming on Friday. Certainly, it’s okay with me if he’d like to, and he would like to sign it together with me. And I understand that’s a big deal, very big deal.”

Zelensky’s trip could mark a significant milestone in securing US support for Ukraine’s recovery and resource development.

The Road to the Agreement: Key Sticking Points

Earlier negotiations faced obstacles, particularly concerning security guarantees and resource-sharing terms. On Monday, a Ukrainian source told CNN that Ukraine was prepared to grant the US access to its rare earth minerals in exchange for US involvement in a reconstruction fund. However, the US had initially resisted including security guarantees in the deal.

A previous version of the agreement, which reportedly involved the Trump administration demanding a $500 billion share of Ukraine’s rare earths and other minerals in exchange for past US aid, was rejected by Zelensky. According to a source, this proposal was unacceptable because it contained no binding commitments from the US, while Ukraine was expected to make significant concessions.

Since then, negotiations have progressed, with both sides moving closer to a mutually beneficial agreement.

International Reactions and Future Implications

The deal has already garnered international attention. During his visit to the White House on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron praised Trump’s efforts:

“I commend President Trump for his decision to work with President Zelensky and to conclude this agreement that’s so important for the US and Ukraine on rare earths and critical minerals.”

While some details—such as security assurances—may still be refined in upcoming discussions, the deal marks a major step in US-Ukraine cooperation, with potential long-term benefits for both nations.
