Third U.S. Carrier, 9,000 Troops Head to Middle East as Trump Weighs Iran Strikes

The deployment would expand the U.S. military presence as Trump keeps further action against Iran under consideration after stalled ceasefire efforts.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump delivers his inaugural address at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 2025.

WASHINGTON, United States – The United States is sending a third aircraft carrier strike group and roughly 9,000 additional sailors and Marines toward the Middle East as President Donald Trump weighs whether to resume military strikes against Iran.

The deployment includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group. More than 7,000 sailors and about 2,000 Marines are aboard the ships now heading toward the region, according to a U.S. official cited by the Associated Press.

The movement comes as Trump has publicly kept the possibility of renewed strikes against Iran open, including after the U.S. midterm elections in November.

Third carrier moves toward the region

The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego on Sept. 27 for what the U.S. Naval Institute reported was an expected extended deployment to the Middle East.

The carrier is the flagship of Carrier Strike Group 9 and is accompanied by its carrier air wing and other escort ships. The group is expected to move into the U.S. Central Command area of operations.

The USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group departed San Diego the following day with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The amphibious group includes the USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage, in addition to the Makin Island. Together, the forces provide additional aircraft, ships and Marines to the U.S. military presence in the region.

Two U.S. carriers are already in the region

The United States already has two aircraft carriers operating in the Middle East: the USS George Washington and USS George H.W. Bush.

The arrival of the Roosevelt could temporarily bring three carrier strike groups into the region. A U.S. official told the Associated Press that the three-carrier presence could occur as early as the end of October.

The exact length of the overlap remains uncertain.

The USS George Washington could eventually return to its home port in Japan, meaning the three-carrier configuration may be temporary rather than a permanent increase in the number of carrier groups assigned to the region.

Deployment expands U.S. military options

The additional ships and personnel increase the forces available to U.S. Central Command as Washington continues military operations and pressure against Iran.

Aircraft carrier strike groups provide carrier-based combat aircraft, air-defense capabilities and escort ships. Amphibious readiness groups provide additional Marines and aviation and maritime capabilities.

The deployment itself does not establish that the additional forces will be used in an offensive operation against Iran.

U.S. officials have not publicly announced a new strike order connected to the deployment.

Trump keeps further strikes under consideration

Trump said in a Time magazine interview published Thursday that renewed bombing of Iran after the Nov. 3 U.S. midterm elections was possible if an agreement with Tehran was not reached.

He also said Iran’s latest ceasefire proposal was not sufficient.

The proposal reportedly included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for Washington lifting its blockade of Iranian ports.

Trump did not publicly provide a timetable for any new military operation.

His comments leave the possibility of renewed strikes open while diplomatic efforts remain unresolved.

Iran-linked allegations add to tensions

The military buildup comes as U.S. and Israeli authorities investigate separate incidents that could affect the confrontation with Iran.

Trump said Thursday that early indications suggested Iran could be linked to the co-pilot involved in the attempted attack aboard a Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

He did not provide evidence publicly establishing such a connection and said the matter remained under investigation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also described the incident as potentially connected to radicalization, but investigators have not publicly established a definitive motive.

The claims therefore remain separate from the confirmed movement of U.S. military forces.

U.S. presence could exceed 20,000 sailors and Marines

The new deployment would significantly increase the concentration of U.S. naval personnel in the region.

The Associated Press reported that the additional forces could bring the number of U.S. sailors and Marines in the Middle East to more than 20,000, alongside hundreds of aircraft and numerous warships.

Other reporting has put the broader U.S. military presence in the region at more than 50,000 personnel, although the figures cover forces beyond the naval and Marine units involved in the latest movement.

Those figures should not be treated as interchangeable: one describes sailors and Marines in the region, while the broader estimate encompasses the wider U.S. military presence.

Deployment follows stalled ceasefire efforts

The movement follows the collapse of efforts to secure a new ceasefire arrangement between Washington and Tehran.

Trump rejected Iran’s latest seven-day proposal, saying it did not meet U.S. requirements. The proposal included provisions concerning the Strait of Hormuz and renewed nuclear negotiations.

At the same time, U.S. forces have maintained a substantial naval presence in and around the region.

The latest deployment gives U.S. commanders additional ships, aircraft and personnel while the administration considers its next steps.

What the deployment means now

The arrival of the Roosevelt strike group would give the United States three carrier strike groups in the Middle East for at least part of the current deployment cycle if the existing groups remain in place.

The additional forces also give Washington more military capacity while negotiations with Iran remain unresolved.

However, the deployment does not by itself confirm that another U.S. attack on Iran has been ordered.

For now, the verified developments are that the USS Theodore Roosevelt and USS Makin Island groups have departed for the region, roughly 9,000 sailors and Marines are aboard those forces, two U.S. carrier groups are already operating in the Middle East, and Trump has said renewed strikes against Iran remain a possibility.

The timing and scope of any future U.S. military action remain undecided publicly.
