BRISTOL, Conn. – ESPN has begun a significant round of layoffs tied largely to the integration of NFL Network and other National Football League media assets, marking the company’s first major workforce reduction in three years.
ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro informed employees of the changes in a company memo distributed Tuesday, saying the restructuring follows months of reviewing staffing, resources and organizational needs after ESPN completed its acquisition of NFL Network and related league media businesses.
“Over the past several months, we’ve made significant progress integrating the NFL assets that we acquired into ESPN,” Pitaro wrote in the memo obtained by The Associated Press.
He said the company had carefully evaluated its organizational structure before making what he described as “difficult decisions” affecting employees.
While most of the layoffs are directly linked to the acquisition, Pitaro said some employees in other parts of ESPN are also being affected. He added that the company would provide support to staff during the transition.
NFL Acquisition Reshaped ESPN Operations
The restructuring follows ESPN’s agreement announced last August to acquire NFL Network and several league-owned media assets, including NFL Fantasy and the distribution rights for the RedZone channel to cable and satellite providers.
The transaction received regulatory approval in January, and NFL Network employees officially joined ESPN on April 1. As part of the agreement, the NFL received a 10% equity stake in ESPN.
The integration has prompted ESPN to consolidate operations as it absorbs the league’s media businesses into its existing organization.
On-Air Personalities Among Those Affected
Although most of the layoffs involve production and behind-the-scenes employees, several well-known on-air personalities were also affected.

NFL analyst Ryan Clark, who joined ESPN in 2015, learned of his layoff while appearing on NFL Live on Monday.
According to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss personnel decisions, Clark had been scheduled to receive the news Tuesday morning before reports of the layoffs became public.
Company executives informed Clark directly, and he did not complete his appearance on the program.
On Tuesday, Clark posted a message on X expressing support for colleagues affected by the layoffs.
“Sending prayers and love to all those laid off today by ESPN. So many of you have poured your life into that company, & I know how you’re feeling right now. My hope is as this door closes another opens for you all. God bless!”
Longtime ESPN broadcaster Karl Ravech was also among those leaving the company. Ravech joined ESPN in 1993 and became one of the network’s best-known baseball voices, serving as the play-by-play announcer for Sunday Night Baseball from 2022 through 2025 before the package moved to NBC this season.
Tom Pelissero, who joined NFL Network in 2017, was also included in the workforce reductions.
ESPN recently signed NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Adam Schefter to contract extensions.
Part of Broader Disney Restructuring
The layoffs at ESPN coincide with additional workforce reductions taking place across The Walt Disney Company this week, reflecting broader corporate restructuring beyond ESPN’s NFL integration.
The company did not disclose how many positions were eliminated.
