Fan in Critical Condition After 21-Foot Fall at PNC Park During Pirates-Cubs Game

PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh Pirates game took a tragic turn Wednesday night when a fan fell from the 21-foot-high Clemente Wall in right field at PNC Park during the seventh inning. The man, whose identity has not been released, remains in critical condition as of Thursday morning, according to officials.

The incident occurred moments after Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen delivered a two-run double that put the Pirates ahead 4-3. Players on the field quickly noticed something was wrong — waving urgently for medical help as the man lay motionless on the warning track below the wall.

Medical personnel, including trainers from both the Pirates and Chicago Cubs, rushed to assist. The man was treated for about five minutes before being taken off the field on a cart and transported to Allegheny General Hospital’s trauma center.

Pittsburgh Public Safety later stated on social media that the fall is being treated as accidental.

Pirates manager Derek Shelton and Cubs manager Craig Counsell were among the first to alert umpires about the situation.

“Even though it was 350 feet away, it was obvious something serious had happened,” Shelton said. “He was laying motionless. We both saw it and reacted immediately. It was extremely unfortunate.”

Players from both teams were visibly shaken. Some gathered to pray, while McCutchen was seen clutching a cross necklace. After the game, he expressed how deeply the team was affected.

“We’re devastated. We prayed together after the game,” said the five-time All-Star. “That fan — he’s the reason we play. He’s the reason we love doing what we do. I just pray he pulls through.”

Although play continued without an official stoppage, there was a noticeable pause as the man was cared for.

Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson shared his emotional reaction.

“I saw the look on Counsell’s face and knew something was terribly wrong,” he said. “All we could do was pray for a strong recovery for him and his family. It was humbling and heartbreaking. We never want to see anything like that happen.”

This is not the first time a fan has suffered a dangerous fall at a sporting event.

In 2015, Atlanta Braves fan Gregory K. Murrey died after falling from an upper deck at Turner Field. Four years earlier, firefighter Shannon Stone tragically fell while reaching for a foul ball during a Texas Rangers game. Both incidents led to renewed scrutiny over stadium safety, prompting some teams to raise guard rails.

In 2022, a fan died after falling from an escalator at Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium during an NFL game.

While the current investigation points to an accident, the fall has once again raised concerns about stadium safety features — and left both players and fans reflecting on the fragility of the moment.

As of Thursday, there were no updates on the man’s condition beyond his critical status. For now, the Pirates community — players and fans alike — are united in hope and prayer for his recovery.
