The reported death of filmmaker Rob Reiner has prompted an outpouring of tributes across California and Hollywood, after authorities confirmed two people were found dead at a Los Angeles residence linked to the director. Police said the case is being treated as a suspected homicide, though key details remain under investigation.
Law enforcement officials in Los Angeles said Sunday evening that officers responded to a call at a private home in Southern California, where two deceased individuals were discovered. While multiple U.S. media outlets, including CNN and NBC, identified the victims as Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, police declined to formally confirm their identities pending notification procedures.
The investigation remains active, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
Police investigation continues
The Los Angeles Police Department told reporters at a media briefing that detectives were still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Officials said they were not, at this stage, interviewing any suspects.
Authorities did not disclose how the victims were found, the possible cause of death, or whether there were signs of forced entry. Police also did not confirm whether the deaths occurred within the same timeframe.
Investigators emphasized that information would be released once it had been verified. The department urged the public to avoid speculation as detectives continue to gather evidence.
The case is being handled by homicide detectives, standard procedure in cases involving unexplained deaths.
Governor Newsom expresses condolences
California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement describing himself and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, as “heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.”

Newsom praised Reiner as a filmmaker whose work shaped generations of moviegoers. “Rob was the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love,” the governor said, referencing films that spanned genres and decades.
Among Reiner’s best-known works are When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men. The films helped define American popular cinema from the late 1980s through the early 1990s and remain widely viewed today.
Beyond filmmaking, Newsom highlighted Reiner’s advocacy on issues including civil rights, early childhood education, tobacco regulation, and marriage equality. “He made California a better place through his good works,” the governor said.
A career spanning decades
Reiner, an actor-turned-director, built a reputation for blending commercial success with character-driven storytelling. His films often explored themes of morality, relationships, and institutional power, resonating with broad audiences in the United States and internationally.
Industry peers frequently cited his ability to navigate comedy and drama with equal fluency. From romantic comedies to courtroom thrillers, his projects reflected both mainstream appeal and a willingness to engage with complex social themes.
His influence extended beyond directing. Reiner was also active in political advocacy and public policy debates, becoming a recognizable voice in California civic life.
While the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths remain unclear, tributes from public officials and entertainment figures underscore his standing within both the film industry and state politics.
Developing situation
Police have not released further details about the timeline leading up to the discovery at the Los Angeles property. Authorities said additional information would be shared as the investigation progresses.
At present, law enforcement officials have asked for patience while forensic teams and detectives continue their work. It remains unclear whether foul play has been confirmed or what evidence led authorities to treat the case as a possible homicide.
The deaths, if formally confirmed, would mark a significant loss for the American film community. Reiner’s body of work has long been regarded as part of the modern Hollywood canon, and his public advocacy made him a prominent figure beyond cinema.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
