Peruvian Fisherman’s Astonishing 95-Day Survival Story at Sea - Peruvian Navy/AFP/handout/Getty Images

Incredible Survival: Fisherman Endures 95 Days Lost in the Ocean

In an extraordinary tale of survival, 61-year-old Peruvian fisherman Máximo Napa was rescued after being lost at sea for 95 days. Napa embarked on a fishing expedition from Marcona, a coastal town in southern Peru, on December 7, 2024. He had provisioned for a two-week journey, but severe storms ten days in diverted his small vessel off course, leaving him adrift in the vast Pacific Ocean.

Despite extensive search efforts by his family and Peruvian maritime authorities, Napa remained unlocated for over three months. His ordeal came to an end on March 12, 2025, when an Ecuadorian fishing patrol discovered him approximately 680 miles off Ecuador’s coast. At the time of rescue, Napa was severely dehydrated and in critical condition.

During his time at sea, Napa survived by collecting rainwater and consuming whatever food sources he could find, including insects, birds, and sea turtles. He endured the final 15 days without any food, relying solely on rainwater for sustenance. Napa’s determination to reunite with his family, especially his two-month-old granddaughter, kept his spirits alive. Reflecting on his experience, he expressed gratitude for a second chance at life.

His mother, Elena Castro, admitted that while some family members remained hopeful, she had begun to fear the worst. She recounted praying for her son’s return, whether alive or deceased, to have closure. Napa’s unexpected survival has been hailed as a testament to human resilience and the will to live against all odds.

Following his rescue, Napa underwent medical evaluations in Paita, near the Ecuadorian border, before plans were made for his return to Lima. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
