Bald Eagle Allegedly Drops Cat Through Car Windshield in North Carolina

A motorist in western North Carolina experienced a rare and startling encounter with wildlife when the carcass of a cat struck her windshield on U.S. Route 74 near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The driver, who has not been publicly identified, reported that a bald eagle was responsible for dropping the feline, shattering her front passenger window.

The incident occurred near Bryson City, approximately 65 miles southwest of Asheville. In a recorded 911 call, the driver described the event with disbelief. “You may not believe me, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield,” she told the dispatcher. Despite the unusual nature of the call, the dispatcher responded with calm humor and arranged for the Highway Patrol to file a report.

Bald Eagles and Prey Behavior

Experts from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said the scenario, while extraordinary, aligns with known bald eagle behavior. Kendrick Weeks, Western Wildlife Diversity Program supervisor, explained that eagles may drop prey for multiple reasons, including difficulty carrying heavy animals, poor grip, or interference from other raptors.

“It is much harder for them to take a live cat than a dead cat,” Weeks said. “Scavenging is a common behavior in bald eagles, and they usually don’t prey on something they don’t find palatable.” This suggests that the cat in question was likely deceased before the eagle carried it.

Bald eagles are native to North Carolina and most of North America, with populations steadily increasing over recent decades. The state is home to more than 200 nesting pairs. Adult bald eagles weigh between 6 1/2 and 13 1/2 pounds and boast wingspans ranging from 6 to 7 feet, making them among the largest raptors in the region.

Unusual Wildlife Incidents on Roadways

While encounters between vehicles and wildlife are common, cases involving raptors directly affecting motorists are rare. Experts caution that eagles and other raptors occasionally drop prey mid-flight, particularly if the animal is too heavy, if it struggles, or if another bird interferes with the hunt. Weeks emphasized that such events, while extraordinary, are part of natural predatory behavior.

The driver recounted that another witness also saw the cat fall, confirming the improbable story. “He’s like, ‘That is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.’ I’m like, ‘Really?’” she said during the 911 call. The dispatcher verified the cat’s condition, confirming it had not entered the vehicle.

Bald Eagle Population Recovery

Bald eagles in North Carolina reflect broader conservation successes. Once endangered due to pesticide use and habitat loss, the species has rebounded following decades of federal protection under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and state conservation programs. Their thriving populations now bring them into occasional contact with human activity, sometimes resulting in unusual encounters like the one on Route 74.

Experts remind the public that while such incidents are rare, they underscore the presence of apex predators in natural and semi-urban environments. Bald eagles’ large wingspans, powerful talons, and strong beaks make them efficient hunters and scavengers, capable of carrying prey that can include rabbits, fish, and occasionally small mammals like cats.

Official Response and Public Reactions

The North Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the report and documented the incident. While no injuries were reported, the event has drawn attention on social media and news outlets, highlighting the intersection of human activity and wildlife behavior.

Weeks noted that observers should avoid approaching large raptors and be aware of their behavior, especially during nesting and feeding seasons. Bald eagles are protected by federal and state laws, and interference can carry legal consequences.

The motorist’s experience serves as a reminder of both the unpredictability of nature and the importance of remaining cautious on roadways that traverse wildlife habitats. While most wildlife encounters involve smaller animals or birds, this episode demonstrates the potential for unexpected and dramatic interactions with native fauna.

Conclusion

Although it may seem improbable, the bald eagle incident aligns with known wildlife behavior patterns. Authorities stress that the motorist’s survival without injury is fortunate and that such rare encounters highlight the ongoing recovery and ecological presence of bald eagles in North Carolina.
