Major Developments We’re Following

  • A major flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the China border on August 26, sending water, sediment and large boulders through the Bhote Koshi and downstream river systems.
  • The flood severely affected areas including Timure and Syapru Besi and caused extensive damage to homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.
  • Nepalese authorities began search-and-rescue operations as communications and access to affected areas were disrupted.
  • Floodwaters moved downstream through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli systems, raising concerns for communities in Nuwakot and Dhading.
  • The number of confirmed deaths and missing people remained preliminary during the first 12 hours and changed rapidly as bodies were recovered and authorities consolidated reports.
  • Scientists were investigating whether an ice-rock avalanche or related high-altitude event triggered the sudden flood. No definitive cause had been established during the opening phase.

What We Know

  • Event: Major flash flood
  • Date: August 26, 2026
  • Initial reported timing: Around 09:00 local time / approximately 03:15 UTC
  • Primary affected area: Rasuwa district, Bagmati Province
  • Main river system: Bhote Koshi
  • Downstream system: Trishuli River
  • Worst-affected locations reported: Timure and Syapru Besi, with impacts extending downstream.
  • ICIMOD reported that water levels on the Trishuli River at Galchchi rose by as much as nine metres within 30 minutes, while levels at Malekhu rose by about seven metres over a similar period.
  • Several hydrological monitoring stations were damaged or swept away, although the Galchchi monitoring station remained operational.
  • Early reports documented deaths and missing people, but the figures were rapidly revised as search operations continued.
  • Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology maintains national flood monitoring and warning services and advises the public to use official flood information.

What We Don’t Know

  • The final death toll remains unknown.
  • The full number of missing people has not been established.
  • The complete extent of damage in remote parts of Rasuwa remains unclear.
  • The precise physical trigger of the flood remains under investigation.
  • It remains unclear whether any temporary blockage upstream could generate another flood wave.
  • The full extent of damage to hydropower facilities and monitoring infrastructure is still being assessed.

Public Safety Information

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology operates flood-warning and river-monitoring services and provides flood information through its national system.

ICIMOD reported concerns about a possible upstream blockage and warned that a secondary flood could occur if impounded water were suddenly released. Authorities were continuing to assess the situation and evacuation measures.

Residents in affected river valleys should follow instructions from Nepalese authorities and avoid riverbanks, damaged bridges and unstable structures.

Live Updates

03:15 UTC — Flash Flood Strikes Rasuwa

A major flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district at around 09:00 local time on August 26, according to local reports cited by ICIMOD.

The surge entered the Bhote Koshi River system and carried water, sediment and large boulders downstream. The exact trigger had not yet been established.

04:00 UTC — Flood Moves Downstream Through the Bhote Koshi

The flood travelled downstream from the Rasuwa border area through the Bhote Koshi River and toward the Trishuli River system.

ICIMOD reported that communities farther downstream, including areas in Nuwakot and Dhading, faced potential impacts as the flood wave moved through the river network.

LIVE: Nepal Floods — Search Continues as Death Toll Rises

September 2, 2026

05:00 UTC — Timure and Syapru Besi Among Areas Hit

Early assessments identified Timure and Syapru Besi among the areas severely affected by the flood.

Local reporting described damage to settlements and infrastructure along the river corridor, while communications with some affected areas became difficult.

06:00 UTC — Rescue and Damage Assessments Begin

Search-and-rescue operations began as authorities attempted to establish the extent of casualties and infrastructure damage.

Access to some affected locations was difficult because roads and communications had been disrupted by the flood. Initial casualty figures remained incomplete.

07:00 UTC — Downstream Flood Risk Expands

The rapidly moving floodwater raised concerns for communities along the Trishuli River downstream from Rasuwa.

ICIMOD reported exceptionally rapid changes in river levels, with the Trishuli at Galchchi rising by as much as nine metres within 30 minutes.

08:00 UTC — Hydrological Monitoring Infrastructure Damaged

Several water-monitoring stations along the Trishuli River were reportedly damaged or washed away by the flood.

ICIMOD said the Galchchi monitoring station remained operational while scientists and authorities continued collecting information on river conditions.

09:00 UTC — Possible Ice-Rock Avalanche Under Investigation

Scientists began investigating whether an ice-rock avalanche from a high-altitude area may have entered the Lhende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi, triggering the flood.

ICIMOD emphasized that this remained a suspected trigger, not a confirmed cause.

10:00 UTC — Possible Secondary Flood Risk Identified

Scientists and authorities assessed whether debris may have temporarily blocked part of the river and formed a landslide dam.

ICIMOD warned that such a blockage could create a secondary hazard if impounded water were suddenly released. The size, location and stability of any possible blockage remained under investigation.

11:00 UTC — Seismic Signals Examined

Researchers examining the disaster identified unusual signals in seismic records from monitoring stations near the affected region.

ICIMOD said scientists were investigating whether the signals were connected to the suspected avalanche. No causal relationship between seismic activity and the flood had been established.

12:00 UTC — Damage Assessment Remains Preliminary

Authorities continued assessing damage to homes, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other infrastructure.

At this stage, casualty and missing-person figures remained preliminary because communications with some affected locations were disrupted and rescue teams were still reaching affected areas.

13:56 UTC — Dozens Reported Missing as Rescue Operations Continue

By this point, local reporting indicated that people remained missing across Rasuwa and neighbouring districts.

The Kathmandu Post reported that security personnel and workers connected to hydropower projects were among those out of contact, while bad weather was hampering rescue flights.

14:30 UTC — Flood Damage Extends Downstream

Reports indicated that the flood had affected communities beyond Rasuwa, including areas in Nuwakot and Dhading.

Authorities continued recovering victims and searching for missing people while the full scale of infrastructure damage remained under assessment.

15:15 UTC — First 12 Hours: Search and Rescue Continues

Twelve hours after the reported onset of the flood, search-and-rescue operations remained active across Rasuwa and downstream districts.

The precise death toll, number of missing people and total infrastructure losses remained subject to revision. Scientists were still investigating the flood’s trigger, while authorities assessed the possibility of additional downstream hazards.

Editorial chronology note: No independently verified hourly development was available for every hour of the first 12-hour period. JournosNews therefore does not create artificial hourly entries. The timestamps above distinguish the event sequence from later published assessments and identify information as preliminary where appropriate.

Emergency Response

Nepalese security and emergency personnel were deployed for search-and-rescue operations in affected areas.

Bad weather, damaged roads and disrupted communications complicated access to some locations. The Nepal Army and other security agencies were involved in rescue operations, including helicopter-supported searches where conditions permitted.

Scientific Assessment

ICIMOD scientists and partner institutions in Nepal and China were investigating a possible ice-rock avalanche originating at high altitude.

The organization said preliminary evidence suggested that a large volume of ice and rock debris may have entered the Lhende Khola. However, the exact trigger remained unconfirmed.

ICIMOD also cautioned against attributing the specific event to climate change at this stage, saying more analysis was needed.

Background

Rasuwa and the Bhote Koshi basin are mountainous areas where communities, roads, hydropower infrastructure and cross-border trade routes are concentrated along narrow river valleys.

The region experienced another major flood in 2025. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology subsequently assessed that earlier flooding in the Lhende River near the Nepal-China border was caused by a glacial lake outburst.
