Meloni Faces New Challenge as Vannacci Emerges on Italy’s Political Right

ROME — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing a new political test as former army general Roberto Vannacci seeks to establish himself as a significant force on the right, potentially complicating the balance that has sustained Italy’s governing coalition.

At a gathering in Rome on Sunday, Vannacci formally launched his political movement, Futuro Nazionale (National Future), presenting it as an alternative for conservative voters and positioning himself as an outsider challenging Italy’s political establishment.

The development introduces fresh uncertainty into the center-right bloc that has supported Meloni’s government and could influence coalition dynamics ahead of Italy’s next general election, expected in 2027.

A Challenge From the Right

Meloni’s leadership has surprised some observers since she took office. Although her political roots are linked to Italy’s post-fascist right and she campaigned with a strong nationalist message, her government has largely adopted a pragmatic and pro-European approach while maintaining political stability.

If her administration remains in office through early September, Meloni is expected to become the longest-serving prime minister in the history of the Italian Republic, surpassing the tenure of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Vannacci’s emergence presents a different challenge. Analysts say his movement is attempting to attract voters who believe the government has moderated its positions on issues such as migration, security, and cultural policies.

Speaking at the party’s founding assembly, Vannacci pledged to prioritize national identity and public security. He portrayed his movement as representing what he described as the “real right,” arguing that conservative priorities have not been fully translated into government policy.

From Military Figure to Political Contender

The 57-year-old first gained national attention in 2023 following the publication of his self-released book Il mondo al contrario (“The World Upside Down”). The book sparked controversy for its criticism of LGBTQ+ people, migrants, and minority groups.

A year later, Vannacci entered electoral politics through Matteo Salvini’s League party and secured more than 530,000 preference votes in the European Parliament elections. He left the League earlier this year to establish his own political organization, prompting criticism from Salvini, who described the move as a betrayal.

Since launching Futuro Nazionale, Vannacci has sought to expand its influence. The party says it has surpassed 100,000 members and now includes eight lawmakers, among them former members of both the League and the coalition partner Forza Italia.

The defections have highlighted underlying tensions within Italy’s governing alliance.

Migration and Security at the Center

Vannacci’s political platform focuses heavily on migration, law enforcement, and opposition to several European Union policies.

Among his proposals are measures aimed at the return of foreign nationals he considers insufficiently integrated into Italian society, criticism of the EU’s Green Deal environmental agenda, and opposition to Western sanctions imposed on Russia.

His rise mirrors broader political developments across Europe, where nationalist and right-wing parties have increased their influence by emphasizing migration, security concerns, and cultural debates.

A Potential Factor in Future Elections

Political analysts believe Vannacci’s growing support could have consequences beyond his party’s current polling numbers.

Massimiliano Panarari, a politics professor at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, said Vannacci is competing directly for conservative voters within Italy’s governing coalition.

According to Panarari, Meloni’s political strategy had largely depended on maintaining dominance over the right-wing electorate. Vannacci’s presence introduces a competitor seeking to occupy space further to the right of the government.

Lorenzo Pregliasco, a political analyst and polling expert at YouTrend, said the movement represents a new form of pressure on the ruling coalition because it challenges the government from the right rather than from traditional opposition parties.

Although surveys currently place Futuro Nazionale in the single digits, analysts note that such support could prove significant in a closely contested election environment where coalition arithmetic often determines the outcome.

Strategic Decisions Ahead for Meloni

The emergence of Vannacci leaves Meloni facing a difficult strategic calculation.

Integrating his movement into a broader center-right alliance could help consolidate conservative votes, but it could also create tensions among coalition partners and potentially complicate Meloni’s efforts to maintain a moderate governing image.

Recent exchanges have already exposed strains between the two camps. Addressing parliament earlier this week, Meloni criticized lawmakers aligned with Vannacci, accusing them of actions that undermined the government’s position.

At the same time, Meloni and her allies have so far ruled out any formal electoral arrangement with Futuro Nazionale.

Analysts suggest that the prime minister’s current approach reflects a desire to avoid elevating Vannacci’s profile while waiting to see whether his political momentum endures.

As Italy’s political landscape evolves ahead of the next election cycle, the challenge for Meloni may be preserving the broad coalition that brought her to power while preventing a new rival from reshaping the right-wing electorate.
