Deadly New Orleans Attack: What We Know So Far

FBI Releases Surveillance Images of Suspect
New FBI surveillance photos show the suspected attacker in New Orleans before a deadly truck attack in the French Quarter on New Year’s Day. The attack killed 14 people and injured at least 35 others.

How the Attack Unfolded

  • Time & Location: The attack occurred at 3:15 a.m. local time on Bourbon Street, a major hub for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
  • Incident Details: The attacker, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, drove a rented white Ford pickup truck into the crowd. Surveillance footage shows him swerving onto the pavement to bypass a police vehicle, hitting pedestrians.
  • Gunfight with Police: After exiting the truck, Jabbar fired at officers, injuring two. He was killed in a gunfight with police.

Officials described the act as “very intentional,” with Jabbar allegedly placing explosive devices in the area prior to the attack. The FBI released images of coolers containing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found at the scene, though these devices were not detonated.

Who Was Shamsud-Din Jabbar?

  • Background: Jabbar, 42, was a US citizen and Army veteran from Texas. Raised Muslim, he had recently recommitted to his faith.
  • Military & Career:
    • Served in the US Army, including deployment to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010.
    • Worked in IT and human resources roles before his discharge in 2015.
    • Employed by Deloitte in 2021 and previously worked for Ernst & Young.
  • Personal Life: Jabbar had been married three times and had children from two relationships. Financial difficulties and personal turmoil were highlighted in court records from his most recent divorce.
  • Social Media Videos: On his drive to New Orleans, Jabbar posted videos professing allegiance to ISIS and outlining his plans. He claimed he initially intended to harm his family but decided against it.

Victims of the Attack

The victims included a mix of locals and visitors:

  1. Martin “Tiger” Bech (Princeton football star): Remembered as a fierce competitor and beloved teammate.
  2. Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux (18, aspiring nurse): Snuck out to celebrate with friends.
  3. Hubert Gauthreaux (21, Louisiana resident): Texted his family, “I love you,” moments before the attack.
  4. Reggie Hunter (37, store manager): Known for his vibrant personality.
  5. Nicole Perez (27, deli worker): A dedicated mother of a four-month-old.
  6. Matthew Tenedorio (25, audio-visual technician): Described as having an infectious laugh.
  7. Kareem Badawi (University of Alabama student): Remembered by his school community.
  8. Drew Dauphin (26, lab worker): Known for his positive attitude.
  9. Billy DiMaio (25, podcast producer): Recently promoted at Audacy.
  10. Terrence Kennedy (63, New Orleans native): Identified by his wife.

Investigations and Motive

  • Solo Act: Authorities believe Jabbar acted alone, though investigations into potential accomplices initially took place.
  • Devices and Evidence: The FBI recovered three phones and two laptops for examination.
  • ISIS Connection: Jabbar’s videos revealed his allegiance to ISIS and a belief in a “war between believers and disbelievers.”

Bourbon Street: A Symbol of New Orleans

Bourbon Street, in the heart of the French Quarter, is famous for its nightlife and historic significance. This iconic area, known for Mardi Gras and jazz music, became the site of unimaginable tragedy.

A moment of silence was observed during the rescheduled Sugar Bowl football game, honoring the victims of the attack.

Response from Officials and the Community

  • FBI & Police: Authorities continue to analyze evidence and have ruled out links to a similar incident in Las Vegas.
  • President Biden: Briefed on the attack, he condemned the act and praised first responders.
  • Family’s Grief: Jabbar’s brother expressed shock and extended condolences to the victims, emphasizing that the attack did not represent Islam or their family values.

Conclusion

The New Orleans attack is a grim reminder of the dangers posed by extremism. As investigations continue, the victims’ families and the community mourn the loss of life in one of America’s most vibrant cities.
