How Much of Today’s Vinyl Is Truly All-Analog? PressPick Puts the Figure at 0.7%

live catalog tracks 130 documented all-analog pressings, but missing production details mean the figure cannot show how much of the wider vinyl market uses digital mastering.

A Journos News infographic compares all-analog and digitally sourced vinyl production processes and highlights PressPick’s October 22, 2026, catalog snapshot, which identifies 130 pressings across 96 albums as explicitly documented all-analog reissues. — Journos News, File.

LONDON, United Kingdom — Only 0.7% of the vinyl reissues tracked by PressPick are explicitly documented as all-analog, according to the database’s latest report. Its October 22, 2026 snapshot identifies 130 all-analog pressings across 96 albums.

The figure offers a view of how often labels clearly document an all-analog production chain in PressPick’s catalog. It does not establish that only 0.7% of all vinyl reissues worldwide are all-analog.

That distinction matters to collectors who pay more for specialist editions and want to know how a record was made. A vinyl record may begin with an original analog master tape but pass through a digital stage before the cutting lathe creates the grooves.

PressPick counts a pressing as all-analog only when the documentation for that specific edition explicitly uses terms such as “all-analog,” “all analog” or “AAA.” The phrase “cut from the original master tapes” does not meet that standard on its own.

What the 0.7% figure measures

PressPick’s report lists 130 all-analog pressings across 96 albums. It says these account for 0.7% of the reissues tracked in its catalog. The snapshot is dated October 22, 2026, and the figures may change as the database grows.

The key word is tracked. PressPick is counting documented editions in its own catalog, not every new vinyl release sold by labels, shops or distributors.

The database uses publicly documented release information. It compares details such as the label, catalog number, release year, barcode, mastering engineer, pressing plant and matrix or runout markings. These details help distinguish editions that share the same album title but may have different production histories.

PressPick also sets a strict rule for classifying an edition as all-analog. Its documentation must explicitly identify the production chain as AAA or all-analog. A broad label claim or the reputation of a reissue series is not enough unless the relevant wording appears in the documentation for that edition.

This approach creates a clear threshold for inclusion. It also means the count depends on what labels and other sources have documented and what PressPick has recorded.

What the figure cannot tell us

The 0.7% result is not a global market-share estimate. It does not tell us what proportion of all vinyl reissues released in 2026—or across all years—used an all-analog mastering chain.

Nor does it show that the other 99.3% were digitally mastered. Some editions may use digital transfers. Others may have incomplete production information, leaving their mastering chain unconfirmed.

PressPick says it leaves missing information marked as “not listed” rather than filling gaps with assumptions. It also says it regularly rechecks entries and uses specific identifiers to distinguish similar editions.

That makes an undocumented pressing different from a confirmed digital one. The absence of an AAA claim in a product description is not proof that a digital step occurred. It means the available documentation does not satisfy PressPick’s stated test.

The distinction also limits what the number can say about labels. A label may have a well-documented all-analog series, but individual editions can differ in source material, mastering and production. The report’s count cannot establish the full output of a label or the production method used for every record it releases.

What AAA mastering means

AAA is shorthand for an all-analog production chain. In a conventional all-analog reissue, the audio remains in analog form from the source tape through mastering and cutting to the lacquer used to manufacture records.

A simplified production path looks like this:

A digital step changes that chain. A label might transfer an analog master tape into a digital file, process that file, and then use it to cut the lacquer. The finished product is still a vinyl record, but its mastering chain is not fully analog.

The distinction is not a judgment about whether the record sounds good. It describes how the audio was transferred and processed before pressing.

Digital transfers and DSD are not the same as AAA

DSD, or Direct Stream Digital, is a digital audio format. A record can be sourced from an original analog master tape and still use a DSD transfer during mastering.

That is why a statement such as “sourced from the original master tapes” may be accurate without confirming that the entire chain remained analog. The wording identifies the source, but it does not necessarily explain every step between the tape and the cutting lathe.

Half-speed mastering is different again. It describes the speed at which the source and cutting lathe operate during the cutting process. Abbey Road Studios explains that the source is played and the lathe runs at half the normal rate. The method can be used with different source formats, including analog and digital material.

A record described as half-speed mastered is therefore not automatically AAA. The half-speed label tells buyers about the cutting technique, not whether a digital transfer occurred earlier in the chain.

The same distinction applies to pressing quality. A record may have excellent mastering but suffer from surface noise, off-centre pressing or other manufacturing defects. Conversely, a clean, well-pressed record can still use a digital source. Mastering chain and pressing quality are separate parts of the product.

Blue Note’s Tone Poet series shows why edition details matter

Labels sometimes publish more detailed production information than a generic product listing provides.

Blue Note Records says its Tone Poet audiophile reissue series is mastered all-analog directly from original master tapes by Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology Inc. The label published that description in its announcement of the 2026 series.

Blue Note also published edition-specific details for its three-LP Tone Poet release of Kenny Dorham’s The Complete ‘Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia. The label said the set was cut directly from Rudy Van Gelder’s original master tapes by Gray and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI.

These statements provide more information than a simple “audiophile vinyl” label. They identify the source material, mastering engineer and pressing plant, while the edition-specific description explicitly states that the set is all-analog.

However, a statement about a series should not automatically be applied to every release from the same label. Collectors should check the exact edition they intend to buy, especially when a title has appeared in multiple formats, editions or reissue programmed.

The comparison also illustrates the difference between what a label documents and what a database records. A documented edition can meet a label’s stated production description, but it may not appear in a catalog’s all-analog count if the catalog’s specific inclusion rule is not met by the information attached to that entry.

The Mobile Fidelity controversy changed the conversation

The debate over production transparency became more prominent in 2022, when customers questioned Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab about digital processing in records marketed using terms including “Original Master Recording” and “Ultradisc One-Step.”

On July 27, 2022, Mobile Fidelity president Jim Davis issued a statement acknowledging customer concerns about the use of digital technology in the company’s mastering chain. Davis apologized for vague language and said the company would provide clearer information about the provenance of its products.

The issue also led to litigation. In Tuttle et al. v. Audiophile Music Direct Inc., a US federal court considered a proposed class-action settlement involving records marketed under the “Original Master Recording” and “Ultradisc One-Step” descriptions that had used a DSD transfer in their mastering chain. The court granted preliminary approval of the settlement in May 2023. <

The case concerned the products and claims covered by the litigation. It should not be treated as evidence that all audiophile labels use digital transfers without disclosure, or that all digitally mastered vinyl is misrepresented.

Its broader relevance is the importance of clear language. Collectors need to know whether a product description refers to the original source, the mastering method, the cutting process or the finished pressing. Those are related but different facts.

Does all-analog guarantee better sound?

No. The 0.7% statistic measures a documented production characteristic, not sound quality.

An all-analog chain may be important to a collector who wants to hear a record without an intervening digital transfer. But the final sound also depends on the condition of the source tape, the mastering engineer’s decisions, the quality of the cutting, the pressing plant and the playback equipment.

Digital processing does not automatically make a record inferior. A careful digital transfer and well-executed mastering can produce a record that listeners enjoy. An all-analog chain, meanwhile, cannot correct every problem in a worn source tape or guarantee a quiet, accurately pressed disc.

PressPick itself says its manufacturing signals are not a ranking of sound quality. It presents edition details so buyers can compare releases rather than declaring one production method or pressing the universal winner.

Collectors can therefore separate two questions: Was this record made using the production chain the label describes? And Do I prefer how this edition sounds? The first calls for documentation. The second requires listening and comparison.

How collectors can check a specific edition

Buyers can take several practical steps before paying a premium for an all-analog reissue.

1. Identify the exact edition. Check the catalog number, barcode, release year and format. The same album title can refer to different editions with different sources or mastering chains.

2. Read the full product description. Look for an explicit statement that the specific edition is all-analog or AAA. “From the original master tapes” is useful information, but it does not alone confirm that no digital transfer occurred.

3. Check the mastering credits. The mastering engineer’s name can help identify the edition and locate additional documentation. A credit alone does not establish the complete signal chain.

4. Check the runout markings. The matrix or runout area can identify a cut or pressing. PressPick treats such identifiers as more specific evidence than a general album title or label name. But a mastering engineer’s initials in the runout do not, by themselves, prove that the cut was made directly from analog tape.

5. Look for edition-specific statements. Official label pages, technical notes and release inserts may provide details about source tapes, transfers and cutting. If the label only describes the series in general terms, ask whether the claim applies to the exact pressing.

6. Treat missing information as unknown. If the full chain is not documented, do not assume it was digital—or all-analog. The honest conclusion is that the available evidence does not establish the answer.

The bigger issue is transparency

PressPick’s 0.7% figure is a useful snapshot of how many tracked reissues meet its strict documentation rule. It is not a verdict on the entire vinyl industry, and it does not show that nearly every other reissue uses digital mastering.

The report also cannot establish that the documented all-analog editions sound better than the rest. It measures what the catalog can identify from the available edition-level information.

For collectors, the central lesson is to look beyond the album title, the weight of the vinyl and the reputation of the label. A useful product description should tell buyers what source was used, how the mastering chain worked and which edition those details describe.

The more clearly labels document those steps, the easier it becomes for collectors to make informed choices. Until that information is consistent, the share of documented AAA pressings will remain a measure of what the catalog can verify—not a complete account of how today’s vinyl is made.
