Dolly Parton, the country music icon whose career spanned music, film, business and philanthropy, has died at 80.

Parton’s family announced her death on Aug. 25, 2026. Her official website confirmed that she died peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee.

Her representatives later confirmed that she died following a brief battle with cancer. The type of cancer was not disclosed.

Parton’s death ends a seven-decade career that made her one of the most recognizable figures in American entertainment. She built a global audience through songwriting and recording while also becoming a successful actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist.

A songwriting career that crossed generations

Born Jan. 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton grew up in a large family in the Appalachian Mountains. She moved to Nashville as a teenager and began building her career as a songwriter and performer during the 1960s.

Songs including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You” became defining works in her catalog. Her songwriting also reached audiences well beyond country music.

Whitney Houston’s recording of “I Will Always Love You” became a global hit and introduced Parton’s songwriting to another generation of listeners.

Parton’s career also expanded into film. She appeared in movies including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias. She later developed business ventures in Tennessee, including Dollywood, which became a major tourism attraction in the region.

Entertainment success became a wider cultural legacy

Parton received major honors throughout her career, including Grammy Awards and inductions into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Her influence extended beyond entertainment.

In 1995, she founded the Imagination Library, a literacy initiative that provides books to children. The program eventually expanded internationally and became one of the most prominent parts of her philanthropic legacy.

Parton also supported medical research, disaster relief and other charitable causes. Among her philanthropic contributions was a $1 million donation supporting research connected to development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Her combination of entertainment success and philanthropy helped make her influence broader than that of a conventional recording artist.

Parton remained active in 2026

Parton continued working during the final year of her life.

Her official website announced 82 new global music sales certifications on Aug. 19. It also promoted DOLLY: A True Original Musical, a Broadway production based on her life and music.

Her continued work reflected the breadth of the career she had built. Music, business, entertainment and philanthropy remained closely connected to the Dolly Parton name.

Parton’s death therefore represents the loss of more than a country music star. Her work became part of a much wider cultural landscape spanning recorded music, cinema, tourism, children’s literacy and charitable giving.

The institutions and projects she established will continue beyond her death, while her songs and films remain part of the cultural legacy through which successive generations encountered her work.
