Iranian Rial Falls to Record Low as War Deepens Economic Pressure

The currency traded above 2.5 million rials per dollar as sanctions, oil restrictions and the conflict intensified pressure.

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s rial fell to a new record low on Tuesday, with traders in Tehran exchanging more than 2.5 million rials for $1, marking another sharp decline in the currency as the war and international economic pressure weigh on the Iranian economy.

The latest fall came only 27 days after the rial passed its previous reported record of about 2.2 million per dollar on Sept. 2. The currency has repeatedly established new lows since the war began in February, according to current market reporting.

The exchange rate cited in the latest reports reflects trading in Iran’s open market. It should not be confused with official or administered exchange rates, which can differ substantially from freely traded rates.

War and sanctions intensify economic pressure

Iran’s economy was already under significant pressure from years of international sanctions before the latest conflict. The war has added further constraints, including restrictions affecting Iranian oil exports and financial transactions.

The deterioration in the rial comes against a broader macroeconomic outlook that is also under strain. The International Monetary Fund’s 2026 country data project an average consumer-price inflation rate of 68.9% for Iran and real GDP contraction of 6.1% for the year. Those are IMF projections rather than measurements of the latest exchange-rate movement.

The combination of currency depreciation and elevated inflation can increase the local-currency cost of imported goods and place additional pressure on households and businesses. The precise effect on individual prices depends on exchange-rate pass-through, government controls and the availability of imported goods.

Rial falls as diplomacy focuses on the Strait of Hormuz

The currency’s latest decline came as Tehran and Washington were pursuing indirect diplomatic contacts focused on the Strait of Hormuz, the strategically important waterway through which a major share of global oil trade normally passes.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the discussions had become more serious and that the current focus was on reopening the strait. Qatari mediators were expected to convey Iran’s position to U.S. officials and return with Washington’s response, according to current reporting.

The diplomatic effort has not yet produced a resolution. Iran’s position on reopening the waterway remains tied to conditions it has presented to Washington, while the United States has rejected elements of Tehran’s proposal, according to current reports.

Economic outlook remains under severe strain

The rial’s latest record illustrates the continuing pressure on Iran’s foreign-exchange market, but the exchange rate alone does not establish the precise cause of each daily movement.

The broader economic deterioration is occurring alongside long-standing structural pressures, international sanctions and wartime disruption. The IMF’s current 2026 projections point to both a substantial contraction in real economic activity and exceptionally high inflation.

Iranian officials have previously disputed assessments that the country’s economy is approaching collapse. In early September, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said Iran had sufficient foreign currency reserves and that the central bank could intervene in the foreign-exchange market. Those statements predated Tuesday’s new market-rate record.

The latest depreciation therefore represents a measurable market development, while the extent to which it translates into further inflation, shortages or changes in domestic economic policy remains to be seen.
