X Money is not a bank. Instead, the service relies on financial technology infrastructure provided by Cross River Bank, enabling X to offer payment services without operating as a banking institution.
Invited users receive an X-branded Visa debit card that can be used for purchases and ATM withdrawals, while the platform also supports real-time money transfers between X users.
X Money Offers Banking-Like Features
To attract early adopters, X Money is offering incentives that include a 6% annual yield on qualifying deposits and 3% cashback on eligible purchases.
According to the company, customers must deposit at least $1,000 and subscribe to one of X’s premium membership plans, which start at $8 per month, to qualify for the advertised yield.
Based on the stated terms, users would need to maintain approximately $1,600 in deposits for the annual interest alone to offset the cost of the lowest-priced premium subscription. Additional details regarding eligibility, promotional periods and other conditions have not yet been fully disclosed.
The launch represents another step in Musk’s long-term effort to expand X beyond social media into digital payments and broader financial services.
Service Enters Competitive Digital Payments Market
X Money enters a market already dominated by established peer-to-peer payment platforms, including Venmo, Zelle and Cash App.
The rollout also reflects Musk’s longstanding interest in financial technology. Before leading Tesla, SpaceX and X, Musk helped establish X.com, an online financial services company that later merged with another firm and became part of what is now PayPal.

Initially, X Money is available only to invited users who subscribe to X’s paid services.
Success Will Depend on User Adoption
The limited rollout allows X to test its financial platform before any broader expansion.
Analysts say the company’s long-term success in digital payments will depend on its ability to attract users beyond its existing social media audience, establish trust in handling financial transactions and compete with payment services that already have large customer bases.
As X continues pursuing Musk’s vision of an integrated digital platform, X Money represents one of the company’s most significant moves yet into consumer financial services.
