Todd Meadows Deadliest Catch Death During Season 22 Filming

Discovery series concludes production after Bering Sea tragedy

Todd Meadows, a 25-year-old deckhand appearing on Deadliest Catch, died during filming for Season 22. The incident happened February 25 while he worked aboard the Aleutian Lady in the Bering Sea. Authorities and the network confirmed the death.

The Todd Meadows Deadliest Catch incident occurred near the end of the production cycle. As a result, filming has now concluded.

Incident at Sea

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, watchstanders in Juneau received a call at 5:05 p.m. local time reporting that a crew member had fallen overboard. The vessel was operating about 170 miles north of Dutch Harbor.

Crew members recovered Meadows roughly 10 minutes later. However, he was unresponsive. They attempted first aid and resuscitation, but those efforts failed. The vessel then transported him to Dutch Harbor.

The Coast Guard said it has opened an investigation. The agency added that it investigates marine casualties to determine causes and recommend corrective actions. Officials have not released further details about how the fall occurred.

Network and Crew Response

A spokesperson for Discovery Channel said the company was “deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Todd Meadows.” The network extended condolences to his family, crewmates and the fishing community.

Meadows had recently joined the Aleutian Lady crew. Captain Rick Shelford, who has appeared on the series since Season 19, called the day the “most tragic” in the vessel’s history. He described Meadows as dedicated and respected by fellow crew members.

Meadows is survived by his wife and three children.

Production Context

Deadliest Catch remains one of cable television’s longest-running nonfiction franchises. Produced by Fremantle-owned Original Productions, the series follows commercial crab fishermen operating in the hazardous waters of the Bering Sea.

Season 22 was still filming when the incident occurred. In fact, the Aleutian Lady was the last vessel at sea for the season. Shortly afterward, production wrapped.

Over the years, the program has documented both the rewards and risks of commercial fishing. The profession consistently ranks among the most dangerous in the United States. Consequently, safety concerns often form part of the show’s broader narrative.

Industry and Safety Considerations

The Todd Meadows Deadliest Catch tragedy has renewed attention on safety standards in high-risk unscripted productions. Although camera crews document events rather than direct operations, maritime rules still govern vessel safety.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of Discovery Channel, has not announced changes to the Season 22 schedule. It also has not said how the series will address Meadows’ death on air.

For now, the Coast Guard investigation continues.
