Tristan Rogers, Beloved Robert Scorpio on General Hospital, Dies at 79 After 45 Years of Captivating Soap Opera Fans Worldwide

Published Time: 08-16-2025, 15:20

Tristan Rogers, the Australian actor best known for portraying super spy Robert Scorpio on ABC’s long-running soap opera General Hospital, has died at the age of 79. His death comes less than a month after making a special guest appearance on the series, where he had been a beloved presence for more than four decades.

The news was confirmed by General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini, who praised Rogers for captivating audiences for 45 years and leaving an indelible mark on the fictional town of Port Charles.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Rogers first pursued a passion for music in his early twenties, playing drums in a rock band with friends. When the group disbanded without success, he turned to commercial work and modeling to make ends meet. He also found work as a DJ before deciding to pursue acting.

Rogers initially faced hurdles in Hollywood, where casting directors were hesitant about his strong Australian accent. Despite those challenges, he persisted and eventually secured small roles in Australia before moving to Los Angeles to break into the American entertainment industry.

Breakthrough Role on General Hospital

In 1980, Rogers was cast in what was originally intended as a brief, two-day role on General Hospital. He was brought in as a character meant to rough up the soap’s hero, Luke Spencer, played by Anthony Geary.

Reflecting on those early days in a 2022 interview with fellow cast member Maurice Benard on State of Mind with Maurice Benard, Rogers admitted he “had no idea how big the show was.”

During filming, then-executive producer Gloria Monty saw potential in Rogers and invited him to stay. With no character initially written for him, Rogers spent weeks appearing in scenes with little dialogue—looking “furtive and suspicious”—until the writers developed a backstory. Eventually, his character evolved into Robert Scorpio, a spy first known by the code name “CK8.”

The role quickly grew into a cornerstone of the series, and Scorpio became one of the most iconic figures in Port Charles history.

Iconic Storylines and Fan-Favorite Romances

Robert Scorpio’s storylines often intertwined with action, espionage, and romance, making him a fan favorite. His on-again, off-again relationship with Holly Sutton, played by actress Emma Samms, was one of the show’s most popular romances.

Scorpio also shared a long history with fellow spy Anna Devane, portrayed by Finola Hughes. The pair’s complex relationship included co-parenting their daughter, Robin Scorpio, played by Kimberly McCullough.

In 2024, Rogers and Samms departed the series together in a storyline that paid homage to the classic film Casablanca. The farewell episode was taped with symbolic references to the film, providing a fitting nod to Scorpio’s legacy.

Return to the Show and Health Battle

Rogers briefly reprised his role in July 2025, appearing in a single episode in which his character welcomed Sasha Gilmore, portrayed by Sofia Mattsson, and her new baby to his home in France. During this storyline, it was revealed that Scorpio was Sasha’s biological father.

That same episode disclosed that Rogers’ character was battling lung cancer—an on-screen development that paralleled his own declining health.

Beyond General Hospital

Although best known for his role as Robert Scorpio, Rogers also appeared in other daytime dramas and television projects. His credits included The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young & the Restless, and the digital series Studio City.

His work on Studio City earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Digital Drama Series, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and respected performer.

Tributes and Legacy

Following his death, General Hospital released an official statement expressing its grief. “The entire ‘General Hospital’ family is heartbroken to hear of Tristan Rogers’ passing,” executive producer Frank Valentini said. “Tristan has captivated our fans for 45 years, and Port Charles will not be the same without him—or Robert Scorpio.”

Fans and colleagues have taken to social media to share tributes, remembering Rogers not only for his performances but also for his warmth and dedication to his craft.

Rogers is survived by his wife, Teresa Parkerson, as well as a daughter and a son.

Remembering a Soap Opera Legend

Tristan Rogers’ contribution to daytime television spans more than four decades, leaving a lasting cultural imprint on generations of General Hospital viewers. His portrayal of Robert Scorpio—an enduring blend of espionage, romance, and family drama—ensured his place as one of the most memorable characters in soap opera history.

As the cast and fans of General Hospital mourn his passing, his legacy lives on in the countless storylines, relationships, and moments he brought to life on screen.
