Driver Plows Into Liverpool Soccer Fans Celebrating Premier League Win — Police Say No Terrorism Suspected

What started as a joyful celebration quickly turned into chaos on Monday in Liverpool, when a minivan drove into a crowd of soccer fans marking the city’s Premier League championship. More than 45 people were injured in the shocking incident that shook the festive atmosphere.

What Happened?

Police say a 53-year-old white British man was the sole driver involved in the attack. Authorities have ruled out terrorism, focusing instead on understanding the driver’s motives.

The crowd had gathered in tens of thousands to celebrate Liverpool’s 20th top-flight title — their first since 2020. Fans, waving scarves and flags, braved the wet weather as the team paraded through the streets atop buses adorned with “Ours Again.” The atmosphere was vibrant, full of hope and pride.

Suddenly, a gray minivan appeared, moving fast through the crowd. Social media videos show the vehicle striking at least one person before plowing through the mass of fans, pushing bodies along the street.

Eyewitness Accounts

Harry Rashid was with his wife and two young daughters when the van sped by.
“It was extremely fast. At first, we heard the sounds of people getting knocked off the bonnet,” Rashid recalled. “The crowd rushed the vehicle, smashing its windows, but then it sped off again, driving over more people. It was horrible.”

He described the scene as deliberate and terrifying. “My daughter screamed. People were just innocent fans trying to enjoy the parade.”

Peter Jones, who had traveled from the Isle of Man, also witnessed the aftermath. “I saw at least half a dozen people down after the car smashed into the crowd. Police and medics rushed to help immediately.”

The Human Toll

According to Dave Kitchin from North West Air Ambulance, 27 people were hospitalized, including two with serious injuries. Another 20 were treated at the scene, with at least four children among those hurt. Firefighters had to lift the vehicle to free four victims trapped underneath it, including a medic who had been on duty nearby.

Official Response

Merseyside Police urged the public to avoid speculation and refrain from sharing distressing content online while the investigation continues. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the scenes “appalling” and confirmed he was being regularly updated.

Liverpool Football Club released a brief statement expressing their thoughts and prayers for those affected. The Premier League echoed those sentiments, condemning the “appalling events.”

A History of Misinformation

Police made a point of identifying the driver’s background as white British, hoping to prevent the spread of misinformation on social media. This caution comes after last summer’s tragic stabbing rampage in nearby Southport, where incorrect rumors about the suspect’s identity fueled racial tensions and unrest.

The Celebration Continues

Despite the tragedy, the spirit of Liverpool’s fans remains strong. The city’s players, parading through a sea of red smoke, rain, and fireworks, symbolized the resilience and passion that make Liverpool’s football culture so unique.
