Russell Brand Charged with Rape and Multiple Sexual Offences

British comedian and actor Russell Brand has officially been charged with multiple sexual offences dating back to the early 2000s.

The 49-year-old, who rose to fame as a stand-up comic and later became a household name in television and film, now faces serious criminal charges stemming from allegations made by four women. The charges cover incidents reported to have occurred between 1999 and 2005.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Russell Brand has been charged with:

  • One count of rape (1999, Bournemouth area)
  • One count of indecent assault (2001, Westminster, London)
  • One count of oral rape and one count of sexual assault (2004, Westminster)
  • One further count of sexual assault (2004–2005, Westminster)

The allegations follow a high-profile investigation led by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches, which aired in September 2023. The exposé featured multiple women sharing disturbing accounts of their experiences with Brand.

Brand has consistently denied all allegations, previously describing them as “very, very hurtful” and insisting all his past relationships were “always consensual.” He has yet to issue a public statement following news of the formal charges.

Brand is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2. However, he is currently believed to be in the United States.

In such cases, UK prosecutors may attempt to coordinate the voluntary return of a suspect. If no agreement is reached, extradition may be pursued.

Jaswant Narwal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), confirmed the decision to charge Brand:

“We carefully reviewed the evidence after a police investigation into allegations made following the Channel 4 documentary… We have concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with offences including rape, sexual assault and indecent assault.”

Narwal emphasized that criminal proceedings are now active, and that Brand is entitled to a fair trial:

“It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or online sharing of information that could prejudice these proceedings.”

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police added:

“The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers… The Met’s investigation remains open.”

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. A dedicated team is reachable at [email protected], and support is also available through Rape Crisis via the 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.

Russell Brand’s career took off in the early 2000s with performances at venues like the Hackney Empire and the Edinburgh Fringe. He later moved into mainstream media, hosting popular TV and radio shows on Channel 4, BBC Radio 2, and BBC 6 Music.

His fame eventually crossed over into Hollywood, with roles in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek.

Now, the spotlight on Brand has shifted dramatically — from comedy stages and film sets to a courtroom where he will answer to serious criminal charges.
