LOS ANGELES (Journos News) – Prosecutors in Los Angeles have charged Nick Reiner, 32, with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, authorities announced.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said during a news conference that the charges relate to the fatal stabbing of the couple at their home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.
“Their loss is beyond tragic and we will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice,” Hochman said.
Authorities said the charges include two counts of first-degree murder along with special-circumstance allegations of multiple murders and an allegation that a dangerous weapon—a knife—was used. Prosecutors said the additional allegations could increase potential penalties if the defendant is convicted.
Hochman said his office has not yet determined whether it will seek the death penalty.
Investigation and Arrest
According to police, the bodies of Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner were discovered in their Brentwood residence with apparent stab wounds. The discovery prompted a homicide investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police said Nick Reiner was arrested several hours later in the Exposition Park area near the University of Southern California, approximately 14 miles from the home where the killings occurred.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as deeply affecting the city.
“This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones but for our entire city,” McDonnell said during the announcement.
Investigators believe the victims died from stab wounds, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss details publicly.
Authorities have not publicly identified a motive.
Charges and Legal Status
Prosecutors said Nick Reiner has not yet entered a plea.
He was expected to appear in court Tuesday, but his attorney, Alan Jackson, said the defendant was not transported from jail to the courthouse for medical reasons. The initial court appearance was postponed until Wednesday.
Reiner is currently being held without bail.
Jackson did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the charges.
