At least three people were killed and dozens injured after a Russian missile and drone attack struck Kyiv overnight, damaging residential buildings and leaving rescue workers searching for survivors trapped beneath rubble, Ukrainian authorities said.
The attack targeted multiple areas of the Ukrainian capital and formed part of a broader Russian assault that also hit other cities across the country. Emergency services reported that a residential high-rise suffered severe damage after being struck, causing part of the structure to collapse and prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
Officials said firefighters, police officers and emergency personnel worked through the night to extinguish fires and search damaged buildings for survivors. Authorities warned that additional people could remain trapped beneath debris, and rescue operations continued into the morning.
Residential Areas Sustain Heavy Damage
The strikes caused destruction across several districts of Kyiv, where explosions damaged apartment blocks, public facilities and surrounding infrastructure.
Ukrainian officials reported fires in residential neighborhoods and damage near schools and other civilian sites. Thousands of residents sought shelter in subway stations and underground facilities during the attack as air raid alerts sounded across the capital.
Images released by emergency services showed collapsed sections of buildings, shattered windows and rescue crews clearing rubble from heavily damaged structures. Authorities said assessments of the full extent of the destruction were still underway.
Assault Follows Warnings of Escalation
The latest bombardment came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that intelligence assessments indicated Russia could launch another large-scale strike.
Russian officials have linked recent attacks to what Moscow describes as retaliatory measures following Ukrainian operations in Russian-controlled territory. Ukraine has rejected accusations that it deliberately targets civilians and maintains that its military actions focus on legitimate military objectives.
Both sides continue to accuse each other of attacks affecting civilian areas, while international observers remain concerned about the growing humanitarian toll of the conflict.
Conflict Continues Despite Diplomatic Efforts
The attack highlights the ongoing intensity of the war more than four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing hostilities have produced limited progress, while both countries continue to conduct long-range missile and drone operations. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called for additional air defense support from international partners to help protect cities from aerial attacks.
Recent Russian strikes have increasingly targeted urban areas and critical infrastructure, causing repeated disruptions to civilian life and placing additional pressure on emergency services across the country.
Rescue Operations Continue
As recovery efforts proceed, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that casualty figures could rise.
Emergency crews remained at damaged sites searching for survivors and assessing structural risks. Officials said investigations into the full impact of the attack were continuing and urged residents to follow safety guidance as air defense alerts remained active in several regions.
The latest strike adds to a growing list of attacks that have caused significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage during the conflict, reinforcing concerns that the war remains far from a negotiated resolution.
