While the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, sources tell PEOPLE that she had recently undergone a liver transplant.
Health Speculations and Cryptic Social Media Posts
Trachtenberg never publicly disclosed any health conditions, but in January 2024, she addressed speculation about her well-being after fans commented on her Instagram posts.
- “Fun fact. This is my face,” she wrote in response to concerns. “Not malnutrition, no problems. Why do you have to hate? Get a calendar.”
- In another post, she added, “I’ve received several comments recently about my appearance. I have never had plastic surgery. I am happy and healthy. Check yourself, haters.”
Despite her reassurances, ABC News later reported that complications from her liver transplant may have played a role in her passing.
Police Response and Investigation
The NYPD confirmed that officers responded to a 911 call at 1 Columbus Place in New York City around 8:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Trachtenberg unresponsive. Emergency medical services pronounced her deceased at the scene. Authorities do not suspect foul play.
A Career That Defined a Generation
Trachtenberg’s career began in childhood, starring in commercials before moving on to Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Pete & Pete and Harriet the Spy. She also had a role on All My Children.
Her most iconic role came as Dawn Summers, the younger sister of Buffy, in the cult classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She later found further success as Georgina Sparks, a fan-favorite character on Gossip Girl.
Her final on-screen appearance came in 2023 when she reprised her role as Georgina in two episodes of the Gossip Girl reboot on Max.
