New Photos Released in NYPD’s Search for Insurance CEO’s Killer

New York police have released two photos of an unmasked man wanted for questioning in the killing of Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare.

Thompson was fatally shot in the back on Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. The suspect fled the scene without stealing any of Thompson’s belongings, leading investigators to believe the killing was premeditated.

Details of the Attack and Escape

The shooting occurred at 6:45 a.m. near Times Square and Central Park. Thompson was on his way to deliver a speech at an investor conference later that day.

The suspect, wearing a black face mask and a cream-colored jacket, appeared to have waited outside the Hilton hotel for five minutes before the attack. CCTV footage shows the suspect used a pistol equipped with a suppressor. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed that the weapon jammed during the shooting, but the assailant managed to fix it and continue firing.

Thompson was shot in the back and leg. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital about 30 minutes later.

After the attack, the suspect fled on foot. Initial reports suggested he used an electric Citi Bike, but Lyft, which operates Citi Bike, later confirmed that no such vehicle was involved.

Key Clues in the Investigation

The investigation has focused on several critical pieces of evidence:

  1. Suspect Photos and Video:
    • Two images of an unmasked man believed to be connected to the crime were released.
    • Surveillance footage shows the suspect at a Starbucks shortly before the shooting. The mask partially revealed his face, allowing investigators to use facial recognition software.
  2. Bullet Casings with Messages:
    • Three bullet casings at the scene were marked with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.”
    • These terms are associated with criticism of the insurance industry’s tactics to reject claims.
  3. Recovered Items:
    • A discarded coffee cup, potentially carrying fingerprints, has been sent for analysis.
    • A mobile phone found along the escape route is being examined.
  4. Surveillance and Travel Details:
    • The suspect reportedly took a bus from Atlanta, Georgia, to New York days before the shooting, though it’s unclear if he boarded in Atlanta or during a stop.
    • Video shows him outside a residence near the Frederick Douglas housing project on the Upper West Side around 5:00 a.m. on the day of the crime.

The Victim: Brian Thompson

Thompson joined UnitedHealthcare in 2004 and became CEO in 2021, leading the company through a highly profitable period.

His wife told reporters that Thompson had previously received threats but could not provide specific details. Police in his hometown of Maple Grove, Minnesota, confirmed a suspicious incident at his home in 2018, though no criminal activity was identified.

What’s Next in the Case

The NYPD has intensified its efforts, including:

  • Searching Thompson’s hotel room for additional clues.
  • Visiting gun stores in Connecticut to trace the suspect’s firearm, which may have military origins.
  • Testing DNA from evidence like the coffee cup and bullet casings.

While investigators are still piecing together the motive, the details suggest a carefully orchestrated act. The cryptic clues left behind may hold the key to understanding why Thompson was targeted.
