MENLO PARK, United States – WhatsApp has introduced a new set of optional parental controls for teenagers, giving parents more oversight of certain privacy and account settings without giving them access to their children’s private messages or calls.
The Meta-owned messaging platform announced the controls on Sept. 30, saying parents and teenagers can set them up together to determine how the teen account should operate.
The features are being rolled out gradually and may not yet be available in every region.
Parents can manage selected privacy settings
The new controls allow parents to choose certain privacy settings for a teen’s account.
Among the options are who can see the teenager’s profile photo and who can add the account to WhatsApp groups.
If a teenager later wants to loosen some of those restrictions, parental approval through a parent-set PIN is required.
The controls are optional, meaning families can choose whether to activate them and can adjust or turn them off.
Parents can receive group activity alerts
WhatsApp is also giving parents information about certain group activity involving their teenager.
Parents can receive notifications when a teen joins or leaves a group. They can also be notified when a group the teenager belongs to grows significantly in size.
The feature is intended to give parents visibility into changes in the groups their teenagers participate in without exposing the contents of those conversations.
Channels and Status can be restricted
Parents can also manage how teenagers use WhatsApp Channels and Status.
For Channels, parents can choose whether a teenager can access all channels, only parent-approved channels or no channels. Parents can also restrict whether the teenager can create a channel.
For Status, parents can control whose updates the teenager can see and who can see the teenager’s own Status updates.
These settings are controlled through the parental-controls section of WhatsApp and are protected by the parent PIN.
Parents can limit Meta AI settings
The new controls also extend to Meta AI.
Parents can choose between the standard experience, which WhatsApp describes as aligned with content ratings for users 13 and older, and a more restrictive Limited setting.
The Limited setting restricts the topics a teenager can discuss with Meta AI and disables Meta AI features that use Private Processing.
WhatsApp said the AI controls are part of its broader effort to give families more control over how teenagers use different features within the app.
Private messages remain encrypted
Activating parental controls does not give parents the ability to read their teenager’s private WhatsApp conversations.
WhatsApp said personal messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption. The company says that people outside a conversation, including WhatsApp itself, cannot read or listen to those communications.
The distinction means the new system provides parents with selected account and activity information rather than access to the contents of private chats.
Controls require parent involvement
WhatsApp says the controls are designed to be established jointly by parents and teenagers.
The parent links to the teenager’s account and sets the relevant restrictions. A parent-set PIN protects settings that require approval to change.
WhatsApp has described the system as flexible, allowing families to decide how much oversight is appropriate and to modify or disable the controls when circumstances change.
Rollout will happen gradually
The parental controls are being introduced progressively, and WhatsApp says they may not yet be available in every country or region.
The company said the controls will continue to be developed based on feedback from families.
For now, the new system gives parents several additional ways to manage a teenager’s privacy settings, group participation, Channels, Status and Meta AI use while leaving private messages and calls protected by end-to-end encryption.
