Congo Ebola Outbreak Kills 317 in One Week as Health Crisis Accelerates

More than 5,500 cases have been recorded as health workers face limited vaccine options, insecurity and difficult access in eastern Congo.

BUNIA, Congo — An Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo killed 317 people in the seven days through Saturday, marking one of the sharpest increases in deaths recorded during the crisis as health workers struggle to contain rapidly expanding transmission.

Congo’s Health Ministry reported 5,514 cases and 2,642 deaths as of Saturday. Health experts have warned that the actual number of infections could be higher because Ebola may have been circulating for weeks before authorities officially confirmed the outbreak.

The response is being complicated by insecurity, population movements, poor roads, misinformation and disruptions affecting health workers in Ituri province and other affected areas.

Ebola Deaths Rise as Transmission Expands

Nearly half of the reported patients have died, producing a case fatality rate of 47.9%, according to government data.

The rate is considerably higher in hard-to-reach areas of North Kivu, where 68.6% of reported patients have died.

Ituri has emerged as the epicenter of the outbreak. Health teams continue to identify many infections among people who had not previously been listed as contacts of confirmed patients.

That makes it harder to trace transmission chains and identify people who may have been exposed before they spread the virus to others.

Many patients are also dying outside treatment centers, limiting opportunities for health workers to diagnose infections and intervene quickly.

Ebola Deaths Surpass 1,700 in Eastern Congo as Outbreak Outpaces Containment Efforts

August 5, 2026

Outbreak Has Already Produced Thousands of Deaths

The outbreak has reached a scale that has raised concerns among health officials and experts.

According to the supplied reporting, the number of deaths recorded at this stage is already seven times higher than during the comparable stage of the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

That epidemic ultimately killed more than 11,000 people and remains the deadliest Ebola outbreak recorded.

The rapid increase in deaths in Congo is placing additional pressure on treatment facilities and surveillance teams already operating under difficult conditions.

Vaccine Arrives Despite Uncertainty

Congo received more than 16,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine on Friday.

The vaccine has been used successfully against outbreaks caused by the Zaire species of Ebola. The current outbreak, however, is being caused by the less common Bundibugyo virus.

The World Health Organization has said it is not known whether Ervebo protects against Bundibugyo virus.

Early laboratory and animal studies suggest the vaccine could provide some protection. The doses are also expected to contribute to clinical trials examining a vaccine specifically targeting the Bundibugyo virus.

Officials have not yet announced when the newly arrived doses will be administered to frontline health workers.

Insecurity Complicates the Response

The outbreak is unfolding in an area already affected by conflict and humanitarian instability.

Rebel threats and population movements have made it more difficult for medical teams to reach communities and maintain effective disease surveillance.

Health workers have also faced work stoppages linked to unpaid wages, while poor roads have restricted access to affected communities.

Community resistance and misinformation present additional challenges.

Some residents have reportedly questioned whether Ebola exists, complicating efforts to encourage people with symptoms or possible exposure to seek medical assistance.

The arrival of vaccines has nevertheless provided some hope among residents.

“I am very pleased that these vaccines have finally arrived,” said Héritier Ramazani, a resident. “We are fed up with recording new cases of Ebola every day.”

Ebola May Have Spread Before Detection

The official case count may not fully capture the scale of transmission.

Experts cited in the reporting believe the virus may have been circulating in the mining town of Mongbwalu as early as February, several months before Congo officially declared the outbreak on May 15.

A prolonged period of undetected transmission could help explain why infections are now being identified beyond previously known contacts.

It could also contribute to the number of patients dying outside treatment facilities, where health teams have fewer opportunities to identify infections and prevent additional transmission.

Response Faces Critical Test

Health authorities now face the challenge of expanding surveillance, treatment and community outreach while determining whether Ervebo can provide meaningful protection against the Bundibugyo virus.

The timing of vaccine deployment, the results of clinical trials and the ability of health workers to reach affected communities will be important factors in determining whether the outbreak can be brought under control.

For now, the combination of rapid transmission, limited medical options and difficult security conditions continues to make eastern Congo’s Ebola outbreak a major public-health emergency.
