Reno casino shooting: Three killed, suspect critically injured after gunfire outside Grand Sierra Resort

Written July 29, 2025, 14:00 EDT

A tragic shooting outside one of Reno, Nevada’s largest casino resorts has left three people dead and several others injured. Authorities say the gunman opened fire early Monday morning near the valet area of the Grand Sierra Resort before being shot by responding officers. The motive remains unclear, and the suspect is currently in critical condition.

Gunman opens fire near casino entrance

The shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. local time outside the Grand Sierra Resort, a prominent hotel and casino complex just northeast of Lake Tahoe and near the California border. According to police, the suspect approached the valet area, pulled out a handgun, and aimed at a group of people.

Although the weapon initially malfunctioned, the gunman quickly managed to fire multiple shots, hitting several individuals before fleeing on foot through the parking lot.

“There was incredible, swift action that took place,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, crediting law enforcement and security staff with preventing the gunman from entering the resort building and causing further harm.

Multiple casualties and critical injuries

According to Chris Crawforth, police chief of the neighboring city of Sparks, the attack left three people dead and three more wounded, two of whom remain in critical condition. One injured victim has already been released from the hospital, and additional minor injuries were reported inside the casino, including cases of anxiety and injuries sustained while fleeing the scene.

During the incident, the suspect encountered an armed security guard and exchanged gunfire before fleeing again. The shooter later fired at a passing vehicle, fatally striking the driver.

Police respond within minutes

Authorities arrived on the scene within three minutes of the first shots being fired. Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance confirmed that the suspect fired at officers, hitting a patrol car before multiple officers returned fire and struck him. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been made public, was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.

Chief Nance also noted that one officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury, likely from glass fragments.

“Tragedies like this are horrific for any community to endure,” Nance said during a press briefing.

Investigators confirmed that the suspect was carrying multiple firearm magazines, suggesting the potential for an even larger-scale attack had it not been interrupted.

Eyewitness accounts describe chaos

Witnesses who were inside the Grand Sierra Resort at the time of the attack described scenes of confusion and fear. Michael Sisco, 60, said he was preparing to head to the valet when he heard what sounded like popping noises.

“I looked out my window and saw people screaming and running,” he said. “I saw a man holding his stomach and then collapse next to a car. A half hour after the incident I started shaking because I realized I could’ve been there. That’s exactly where I was going.”

Another guest, Christina Martinez, was stepping onto an elevator just as gunfire erupted. She had been getting coffee moments earlier near the resort’s main entrance—close to where the shooting began.

“I feel very blessed, but that’s kind of why I had a panic attack,” Martinez said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God. I was just there.’”

Casino releases statement, security tightened

Following the attack, access to the valet area was restricted, and privacy screens were installed inside the casino to block the view of the crime scene. In a public statement, the Grand Sierra Resort expressed sorrow over the tragedy:

“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today. Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident.”

The casino, which boasts nearly 2,000 hotel rooms and the largest gaming floor in northern Nevada, has become a major entertainment and tourist hub. It has hosted concerts, sports events, and political rallies—including a campaign event by former President Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 election.

Community responds as investigation continues

Authorities continue to investigate the suspect’s background and possible motives. At this time, police say there is no known connection between the shooter and the victims, and it remains unclear whether the gunman was a guest, employee, or visitor at the Grand Sierra Resort.

Devon Reese, Chair of the Board of Health in northern Nevada, confirmed that three additional individuals were treated for minor injuries: one person grazed by a bullet, one with anxiety symptoms, and another who was hurt while escaping the scene.

This is not the first violent incident at the Grand Sierra. In January 2024, two men were charged with fatally shooting a guest at the same location, raising broader concerns about public safety at large-scale resort venues.

Renewed concerns over public safety

The Reno shooting comes amid a broader national conversation about gun violence, mass shootings, and security in public spaces. While the quick response by local authorities and casino security likely prevented greater loss of life, the incident has prompted calls for enhanced security and mental health screenings at major venues.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information or video footage of the event to contact local authorities. The public is also encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious behavior in crowded venues.
