Giannis Confronts Haliburton’s Dad After Pacers’ Playoff Win

Giannis Antetokounmpo Clashes with Tyrese Haliburton’s Father After Pacers Clinch Dramatic Series Win Over Bucks

Tensions boiled over Tuesday night as the Indiana Pacers clinched a thrilling 119-118 overtime win in Game 5 to eliminate the Milwaukee Bucks from the NBA playoffs. But the postgame celebration took an unexpected turn when Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo had a heated moment with Tyrese Haliburton’s father, John Haliburton.

The drama began after Tyrese Haliburton nailed a clutch layup with just 1.3 seconds left in overtime, sealing the series 4-1 for Indiana and sending the Pacers to the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

While the Pacers and their fans erupted in celebration, video captured John Haliburton approaching Giannis, waving a towel with his son’s face on it and shouting, “This is what we effin’ do.” The Bucks star, clearly agitated, later explained that he initially mistook John for an overzealous fan.

“Emotions were running high,” Antetokounmpo told reporters. “I love Tyrese – he’s a great competitor – but when someone comes up waving a towel and being disrespectful like that, I found it very inappropriate.”

The situation escalated into a face-to-face confrontation before players and security stepped in to separate the two.

This wasn’t the only flare-up involving Giannis that night. Earlier, he had to be pulled away from Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin after an embrace turned awkward, with Giannis placing his hand on Mathurin’s neck – a gesture that sparked brief tension before cooler heads prevailed.

Despite the emotions, Giannis made it clear that he values humility in both victory and defeat.

“I believe in being humble when you win,” he said. “People think winning gives you the right to talk trash or be disrespectful. I disagree. I’ve won a championship – they haven’t.”

Tyrese Haliburton addressed the incident after the game, distancing himself from his father’s actions and calling for boundaries.

“Basketball should stay on the court,” the 25-year-old said. “My dad just got excited, but I told him he needs to stay over there and let me come to him to celebrate.”

Haliburton added that he plans to speak with Giannis and made it clear that he did not condone the behavior. “I don’t think my pops was in the right at all,” he said.

Later that night, John Haliburton issued a public apology on X (formerly Twitter):

“I sincerely apologize to Giannis, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Pacers organization… This was not a good reflection on our sport or my son, and I will not make that mistake again.”

Overshadowed by the postgame drama was one of the most intense playoff games of the season.

With Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard sidelined by a torn Achilles, Antetokounmpo delivered an all-time performance: 30 points, 20 rebounds, 13 assists, plus two steals and two blocks, doing everything he could to keep his team alive.

In overtime, Gary Trent Jr. gave the Bucks hope with four clutch three-pointers, but two late turnovers proved costly. The Pacers closed the game on an 8-0 run, capped by Haliburton’s game-winning layup.

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle hailed the moment:

“This one will go down as one of the all-time great Pacers wins… because of the circumstances, because of what was on the line.”

With emotions, legacy, and pride all in play, this series finale had everything—high stakes, heroic performances, and postgame fireworks. And while the Bucks head home early, the Pacers march on to face the Cavs in what promises to be another must-watch matchup.
